Independence, Missouri: Oregon Trail History near Kansas City

The city of Independence, situated 11 miles east of Kansas City, was the defined starting point of the Oregon Trail. The frontier city boomed as its businesses outfitted pioneers for their journey west in the mid-19th century. Independence Square was a meeting place for groups getting ready to head out on the trail. Today, restored storefronts dot the square, including several top-notch restaurants and a soda fountain where Harry S. Truman—a native of Independence—once worked.

Artifacts and journals from settlers heading west are on display at the National Frontier Trails Museum. At some of the exhibits, visitors can listen to recordings of voice actors who bring the stories of the pioneers to life. Independence is also about 6 miles from the Kansas City Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium, and 11 miles from abundant shopping and dining in downtown Kansas City.

Never got to stay. Groupon never sent my reservation over to the hotel. The front desk had a nasty attitude and didn’t want to help. Didn’t get to stay and I have to fight Groupon for my refund. I disapprove Groupon. I found hotels.com and they are great

Nice hotel, good area Booked a room over the phone for a concert, as the first hotel we booked didn’t work out. Lady on the phone said the rate would be $307/night and we could pay cash upon arrival. Gave them my card number to hold the room until we arrived (15 minutes away from the hotel). Upon arrival, we check in the attendant at the front desk (Ben) said we could not pay cash and the rate plus fees/tax was $507 and did not include breakfast, they wanted to charge us an additional $14/person for breakfast. I then explained that the lady on the phone told me we could pay cash not even 15 minutes before that and the rate was $200 less on the phone. We decided to stay as this was our last resort and it was in a good area, felt safe and 10 minutes from Arrowhead. Room was clean and beds were comfortable. Elevator is VERY slow! You would be better off taking the stairs instead of waiting 10 minutes for the elevator. At check out, we returned our room keys and told the attendant on duty we were disappointed that we were told one thing by an employee and then another upon arrival by another.

renovation needed!! The hotel needs a thorough renovation; it is very outdated. Hygiene is also not that great. There is no real shower, just a bathtub (which is poorly positioned) with a tiny showerhead. There is a lot of noise from the nearby highway. The rooms are musty (with little ventilation). There is no central light in the room (only bedside lamps). In short, I won’t be going back."

Awful hotel, especially for a Hilton. Trust the previous reviews. This hotel is simply not good enough to put "Hilton" on their hotel. I have been a Hilton Diamond Member for 15 plus years because Hilton brands and the Hilton Garden Inn almost always deliver an above adequate experience. I never read the reviews when booking because I trust the name, but that was a mistake this time. The elevator is STILL broke and has been for over a year as the front desk worker confirmed. The responses from the owner on Trip Advisor says a remodel is coming in 2024, but so far zero signs of any work being done. The elevator not working for a year plus is simply the owner's complete lack of care for their hotel. The one working elevator lines were outrageous. Often by the time it got to you it was already full. You will have to wait forever or take the stairs. The carpet in the room was disgusting and stain covered. The room and the halls all smelled musty from the old mildew ridden carpet. The breakfast staff was slow and not all that friendly mainly because they were understaffed and overworked. This hotel is a prime example of a owner who simply does not care about their guest. I don't know how Hilton continues to allow it to run and embarrass the Hilton Garden Inn name.
