Holland, Michigan: Dutch Hamlet in the Midwest
Nearly 100,000 tulips bloom each May in Holland’s gardens and parks during the annual Tulip Time Festival. The city was founded in 1847 by Dutch Calvinists, and the tulips are just the beginning of its connections to the Netherlands. Visit the Nelis’ Dutch Village (the theme park opens in mid-April) to climb to the top of a wooden windmill or watch performers in clogs perform traditional folk dances. Pick up your own pair at the wooden shoe factory, where you can watch a carving demonstration with antique tools and machines.
Downtown Holland feels more like a trendy Midwestern town, with local restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries. Pop into New Holland Brewing’s downtown brewpub to sample seasonal and session beers. You can also visit the production campus about 2.5 miles north of here for a brewery tour most Saturday afternoons. If you’re visiting during summer, you’ll want to check out Holland State Park and its sandy beaches. Just 15 minutes away, they’re a nice spot to swim, hike, and play beach volleyball.
