The Northern Beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks: Idyllic Towns, Sand Dunes, and Wright Brothers History

Dubbed the “East Coast’s recreational playground” by Frommer’s, the Outer Banks is a string of narrow barrier islands that hugs the northern coast of North Carolina. Vacationers have flocked to the islands’ postcard-worthy beaches and idyllic villages since the 18th century. The most northerly island in the Outer Banks, Bodie Island, is home to five such towns, known collectively as the Northern Beaches: Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Head to Kill Devil Hills to see the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park, where a large granite boulder commemorates the spot where the world’s first powered flight took off, in 1903. The memorial also includes replicas of the brothers' early gliders. Just outside the town of Nags Head lie some of the East Coast’s tallest natural sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Strong winds off the ocean constantly reshape the dunes and make the area a popular spot for hang-gliding and flying kites. Make the drive south to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for the many ships that have crashed into its dangerous sandbars during storms. Here, you can catch a glimpse of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, whose iconic exterior is a swirl of black and white stripes.

Lousy Hotel, book the Inn at Corolla Light instead! This hotel was the worst experience on our 9 day trip to Virginia and Outer Banks. I tried to book the wonderful Inn at Corolla Light where I once stayed in 1998. Unfortunately they were booked out 3 weeks in advance, so we had no choice and booked this filthy place. Our room was very smelly (mould?), but we couldn't open the balcony door, it had no window screen. I didn't want flies and mosquitos in the room, so we put up with the terrible smell. The bathroom was unprofessionally renovated with the tape still remaining on some spots (?). And the little board on which we put our cup with the tooth brushes was underneath very yucky (I rather don't know what was growing there, in any case their cleaning crew never paid attention to the underside of that board over the sink in the bathroom). The shower was o.k., but it's not a walk in shower, it's a bathtub shower. Their breakfast is not a buffet where you can help yourself, you have to wait for the waitress to ring your number, then you can pick it up at the counter (???). We came one morning at 7 a.m. and were the 3rd table. Shortly after we noticed two other groups who were coming after us and both had their breakfast within no time at all. After 40 minutes I inquired at the counter if they had forgotten about us (we never waited THAT LONG for our breakfast, not even in Europe on our many trips). Finally after close to 50 minutes our breakfast was ready. From that day on we rather had breakfast at Henry's Diner in Kill Devil Hills where we received our breakfast every single morning within 5 minutes. Our room was on the 5th floor (fortunately far away enough from the very noisy indoor pool downstairs), but we were too close to the elevator and would I not have taken my white noise machine with me on this trip, the constant loud ping of the elevator would have kept me awake. Room 510 is still too close to the elevator, try a higher number to be further away from the elevator. This is a very noisy hotel with children still yelling even around 8 p.m.. When you enter the room (the view on the beach and ocean is the only beautiful thing about this hotel) there is a long hallway. If the hotel would invest in an extra door next to the beds, it would protect the hotel guests from all the noise that's going on in the hallway. The receptionists were nice and helpful. The room has a refrigerator and in comparison to the Wyndham Hotel in Williamsburg, VA, it has a closet with hangers (Williamsburg had only hooks on the wall, no closet, no hangers). But there is no free water like in many other hotels where we stayed. Plenty of towels, but the two queen-size beds were lousy. No good mattresses. We got up with a sore back. Never ever again such a cheap hotel! Weak Wi Fi connection. When we booked this hotel via Orbitz, they claimed that breakfast is included, well, it's not included in the room price. They charge you $ 11 per person per day. We paid $ 2.230 for 6 nights which is hopelessly over-priced for a hotel that offers so little. We'll definitely return to the Outer Banks, but next time we'll stay at the Inn at Corolla Light. It has a big parking in front of the hotel. The beach is very beautiful. I'll attach a few pics. We can also recommend visiting Jennette's Pier on the opposite end of Nags Head.

Great staff We had a great stay! The workers were super helpful and nice. I accidentally dropped my towel off the balcony, and one of the workers retrieved it for me. Would definitely recommend staying here.
