Scottsdale, Arizona: Stucco Mansions amid Rocky Desert Landscape

Scottsdale once served as ranch land where farmers grew oranges and lemons and cowboys kicked up dust in the fierce, dry heat of the Sonoran Desert. That era earned Scottsdale the nickname of “The West’s Most Western Town.” Today, it is an affluent city landscaped with lush green grass and lined with stucco mansions. For a glimpse of the city’s Old West roots, head to Old Town Scottsdale, where wooden boardwalks and hitching posts sit in front of a retro ice-cream parlor and rustic specialty shops.

Upon arriving in Scottsdale, you know you’re in the desert—cacti and tumbleweeds dot the landscape, and dry shrubs and gnarled trees cover the McDowell Mountains in the distance. To get a closer look at Southwestern flora, head to the Desert Botanical Garden. There, themed trails wind past huge cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents, best seen in the cooler early morning or twilight hours.

The town of Scottsdale Arizona, is spread out and the Old Western/Cowboy part of town is compact and is full of shops and restaurants. Just a few hundred metres out of the centre ,just over the main road is a very nice Best Western Hotel, The Sundial, this hotel is fairly new and the rooms are large very well furnished, good service with a nice swimming pool, adjacent pay car park with access to the town. Unusually for American hotels, the Sundial includes a very nice cooked breakfast. A good choice at reasonable rates.

Great Stay and Dog Friendly We were only in town for one night and it was a great stay. Very pleasant, good value, and they are dog friendly. The room was clean, spacious, and in good working order. I appreciated the breakfast bar for our takeout dinner and breakfast brought to the room. The soundproofing was impressive. Outside the room, I could easily hear the music from bars two blocks away. Inside the room, I couldn't hear the music or other guests. I slept soundly. Breakfast was a nice surprise. It wasn't the typical buffet. You walk up to a counter and order your selections from a person. The premade items included burrito, eggs, potatoes, pancakes, french toast, sausages, yogurt, fruit, juices, and other items I don't recall. Everything we had was tasty and it was a full meal. The service from the front desk and breakfast station was excellent. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We didn't use the gym or pool but took a look. The gym had an assortment of equipment. The pool looked inviting and I wished I had time to use it. It was a 100% good experience.

Pain in my %$#@ So I made a reservation directly through Best Western. Received my confirmation. I have weeks to cancel with no fee. You need to CALL to cancel - hassle but ok. I call - weeks out - and they tell me there is a Fee To Cancel. I tell them I'm not paying a fee. My reservation says up to two days prior to the res - no charge - clearly. Well.... Someone needs to get back to you. But they don't. I call back two days later and need to leave a message. They call me back... let it ring twice, hang up and don't leave a message. AGAIN I call back and no return call. I wait all day. I call back and cancel. No word about a cancelation fee. I will contest with my credit card if there is. What. A. Pain.

Expensive for Value Needs maintenance. Drawers did not close properly; had to jiggle 2 drawers in order to open/close. Screen door fell off the track Typical dreary, dark room. No water, no robe, but did have a good breakfast burrito. Housekeeping once every 3 days unless you request. With tax, parking etc, it was about $359 a night. Expensive for amenities offered. Pool was good.
