Kanab, Utah: Popular Filming Spot in the Heart of the Grand Circle
Kanab lies in the heart of the Grand Circle, an area of the southwest that has the highest concentration of national parks and monuments in the country. The Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Lake Powell are all connected by scenic byways here. Kanab is a gateway to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, a 1.7-million-acre swath of gaping canyons, paleontological sites, and multicolored cliffs, plateaus, and mesas. A few miles north of town is the famed Moqui Cave, a sandstone cavern that’s served as both an ancient Anasazi storehouse and a 1920s speakeasy. It’s a popular roadside attraction today.
Kanab has approximately 250 sunny days per year. Its pleasant weather and picturesque desert setting have made it a popular shooting location for movies, especially westerns. More than 100 films have been shot in Kanab, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and How the West Was Won. Visitors can check out some of the old sets at the free Little Hollywood Movie Museum.
