Hotel at a Glance: Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa

Perched majestically along a rugged bluff above the Pacific, Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa stands as a testament to both natural grandeur and human craft. Its reclaimed 100- to 150-year-old “sinker” logs evoke the whisper of Redwood forests long past, weaving together history and sustainability in each beam and threshold. Expansive windows frame wind-sculpted pines and surf-lashed coastline, inviting guests into a space where modern arts & crafts design meets reverent homage to the land.

Within these walls, every detail speaks to careful intention: plush leather seating, wood-burning fireplaces, and curated local artisans lend warmth and character. Organic, regionally sourced meals—prepared by a chef versed in both tradition and innovation—become rituals of nourishment. In the common rooms, a fire crackles at the heart of shared moments, while the spa urges quiet introspection through forest bathing, sound therapy, and massage. All the while, the sea’s breath rides the wind, reminding you that this is no ordinary retreat—but a sanctuary anchored in the history of place.

Work needed to bring BGI back to 5+ stars Stayed last weekend at the Inn. Have been a regular guest for several years. Prior visits were always exceptional (5+ stars). This visit had issues/concerns with staff and room. Also, on this visit the food was not as good and there were some other issues. This place was not the same. I emailed Isabel (guest service manager) with detailed list of concerns and why the stay was not worth the price. Isabel sent a detailed response that seemed appropriate and areas they will be working on to bring the BGI back to a higher standard. I appreciated her sincere response. I hope this happens as this has always been such a special place to stay. I will give the BGI second chance down the road.

Avoid this place Wildly overpriced and overrated. I am honestly shocked by the number of 4 and 5 star reviews and accolades for this property. Perhaps it was once great but no more. Room was outdated and in disrepair. Fireplace thermostat fell off repeatedly, and the fireplace itself was off-gassing. Walls are paper thin and you can hear everything in the rooms around and above you. Bed and pillows were cheap and uncomfortable. No fridge in room to keep water or beverages cold. Service and staff attitude was indifferent at best. Ran out of coffee on our second morning with no cups available (“they are being washed”) at 915AM. Included breakfast was OK. The much advertised evening appetizer and wine hour was well below expectations. We did enjoy an excellent massage. We will not be coming back.

Our stay was very disappointing. Our stay was very disappointing. Even though our booking was prepaid, we were charged again at check-in, and the staff repeatedly told us to contact Expedia instead of resolving the issue themselves. The matter was only addressed by them and they reached out to refund me after we returned home, which was extremely frustrating. Additionally, our 4:30 pm spa appointment was cancelled without proper notice, we were celebrating my partner’s birthday, but unfortunately, the experience was ruined. Another dissapointment was that my dietary request to avoid red meat was completely ignored when dinner was served. The only positive was the gentleman at the bar during wine hour, who genuinely understood guest service. Overall, this is not the kind of experience you would expect for a special occasion, and future guests should be aware of these issues. Rooms: The rooms are poorly equipped, they don’t even have a fridge in the room . The windows don’t close properly in the evenings, the restroom blinds are in need of maintenance, and the shower is leaking. Food & drinks: The property does not offer any in-house services beyond the morning breakfast and early evening meal. If you get hungry around 8:30 PM, I would recommend keeping some snacks on hand, though note that the rooms do not have a mini fridge Noteworthy details: The staff here clearly need better training. The next day, we visited Harbor House Inn, and the service was impeccable in comparison. The Brewery Gulch Inn staff seem completely unaware of how a hospitality business should operate

Maybe ok for young adults, but not for us We’re 83, and that may shape our perspective. Our room was up three flights of stairs with no elevator—challenging for older guests. I’d requested an ocean view to bring my wife to her happy place, but the windows were small and didn’t offer much Ocean. The room was clean, but very small, with a single sink, low-profile toilet, and a step-in tub/shower with no grab bars—safety concerns for any age. There were no drawers, minimal furniture, and poor lighting. A wireless phone charger was a nice touch. The grounds have potential but were difficult to walk, with uneven terrain and no handrails at the spa entrance. The front entry had embedded stones, making rolling luggage tough. Thankfully, the receptionist kindly carried our bags upstairs—staff were consistently helpful and kind. Breakfast was good, especially the fresh-squeezed orange juice. The server, Victor excelled. Dinner served in a box with no menu options. A small deck with free wine and fresh air was pleasant, if lacking shade. We enjoyed watching Acorn Woodpeckers and appreciated the games and DVDs. On our third night, we were moved to a nicer room on the main floor with a better bathroom. I opened the unscreened windows. Nothing crawled in. The small candles for nighttime ambiance were lovely. Overall, the staff were the highlight, but the facility didn’t match the price point. We likely won’t return, but I’m not angry—just sharing our experience in hopes it helps the team improve.
