Work needed to bring BGI back to 5+ stars Stayed last weekend at the Inn. Have been a regular guest for several years. Prior visits were always exceptional (5+ stars). This visit had issues/concerns with staff and room. Also, on this visit the food was not as good and there were some other issues. This place was not the same. I emailed Isabel (guest service manager) with detailed list of concerns and why the stay was not worth the price. Isabel sent a detailed response that seemed appropriate and areas they will be working on to bring the BGI back to a higher standard. I appreciated her sincere response. I hope this happens as this has always been such a special place to stay. I will give the BGI second chance down the road.

Hotel at a Glance: Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa

Perched majestically along a rugged bluff above the Pacific, Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa stands as a testament to both natural grandeur and human craft. Its reclaimed 100- to 150-year-old “sinker” logs evoke the whisper of Redwood forests long past, weaving together history and sustainability in each beam and threshold. Expansive windows frame wind-sculpted pines and surf-lashed coastline, inviting guests into a space where modern arts & crafts design meets reverent homage to the land.

Within these walls, every detail speaks to careful intention: plush leather seating, wood-burning fireplaces, and curated local artisans lend warmth and character. Organic, regionally sourced meals—prepared by a chef versed in both tradition and innovation—become rituals of nourishment. In the common rooms, a fire crackles at the heart of shared moments, while the spa urges quiet introspection through forest bathing, sound therapy, and massage. All the while, the sea’s breath rides the wind, reminding you that this is no ordinary retreat—but a sanctuary anchored in the history of place.

Disappointing for the price Looked amazing on web site, but overall disappointing and over priced. Walls are paper thin as described by other guests. Food and wine is average (breakfast) to poor (dinner ). Front desk service was excellent. The room, was nice, but light bulbs flickered with dimmer, and water pressure was really poor. Worth 1/2 the price we paid. Won’t stay again.

Horrible Service DO NOT STAY HERE. While the view from the inn is beautiful, the service is horrible, the walls are paper-thin and the rooms are mediocre. Specifically, Crystal at the front desk is one of the worst service people I’ve ever encountered. When I left the key at the front desk to checkout, Crystal said, “Did you request a late checkout.” Since it was noon and no one told us that checkout was at 11 am, I told Crystal that I didn’t know what she was talking about. She rudely responded that she was going to charge us a $100 late checkout fee. I told her not to do so. The late checkout fee was ridiculous because the inn was not fully occupied. An hour after leaving the inn, I received an email with the final invoice showing the $100 late fee. I highly recommend visiting Mendocino, but stay anywhere but the Brewery Gulch Inn.

Service needs improvements and overcharged Stayed one night in a suite room. Based on the very high online ratings, we expected a high-quality stay and attentive service. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. We arrived around 6:00 p.m. when it was already dark. Upon entering the lobby, we saw a group of people dining, but no one acknowledged or welcomed us. After waiting for a while, I had to ask how to check in. A staff member came from the dining area to assist and informed us of a 5% gratuity charge for food service. The check-in staff member later appeared and helped with luggage only after we requested assistance. We were given two bento boxes, but no one helped deliver them to our room. The food was cold, and there was no assistance with drinks—everything had to be handled by ourselves. Breakfast the next morning was better in terms of food quality. Someone helped us place our order, but we still needed to refill drinks on our own. At checkout, we received only a brief “thank you,” with no further interaction. Overall, we did not feel welcomed during our stay. The room and the property itself were cozy and warm, but the service needs significant improvement. Given the price, the stay felt heavily overcharged for the level of service provided.

Avoid this place Wildly overpriced and overrated. I am honestly shocked by the number of 4 and 5 star reviews and accolades for this property. Perhaps it was once great but no more. Room was outdated and in disrepair. Fireplace thermostat fell off repeatedly, and the fireplace itself was off-gassing. Walls are paper thin and you can hear everything in the rooms around and above you. Bed and pillows were cheap and uncomfortable. No fridge in room to keep water or beverages cold. Service and staff attitude was indifferent at best. Ran out of coffee on our second morning with no cups available (“they are being washed”) at 915AM. Included breakfast was OK. The much advertised evening appetizer and wine hour was well below expectations. We did enjoy an excellent massage. We will not be coming back.
