Hotel at a Glance: British Colonial Nassau

British Colonial Nassau is an iconic beachfront landmark with over a century of Bahamian history. Originally built in 1900 on Nassau’s waterfront and beautifully rebuilt in 1924, the hotel has long been woven into the island’s story.

In 2024, the property completed a $92 million comprehensive renovation, refreshing guestrooms, public spaces, restaurants, and pools while preserving its historic charm. Today, guests enjoy modern sophistication in the heart of downtown Nassau, with direct beach access, oceanview, gardenview, and cityview accommodations, two pristine oceanfront pools, and vibrant dining experiences—including an on-site supper club.

Historic elegance meets contemporary comfort at one of Nassau’s most celebrated addresses.

Nassau, Bahamas: Colonial Charm Meets Island Energy

Nassau, the colorful capital of the Bahamas, blends centuries of history with vibrant island life. Once a pirate stronghold, the city transformed in 1718 under Royal Governor Woodes Rogers, and its British colonial influence still shines through pastel architecture, historic forts like Fort Charlotte and Fort Fincastle, and stately Government House overlooking the harbor.

Today, Bay Street and Parliament Square bustle with shops, dining, and cultural landmarks, all set against turquoise waters and white-sand beaches. From its storied past to its lively present, Nassau offers a walkable mix of heritage, seaside beauty, and Caribbean spirit.

Beware of lumpy mattresses and toilets that have a mind of their own The best part of the stay was the staff. They were helpful, cordial, friendly and gregarious. That translated in very good service. I had a hard time believing that the hotel reopened in 2023 after refurbishment, as I experienced 1) a lumpy mattress, 2) a toilet that worked at times (after being fixed), 3) a stench emanating from the shower stall and 4) the in-room safe that needed fixing. I was not aware of the proximity of the hotel to the dock where the megaships arrive with their throngs of tourists. In other words, this hotel would not be suitable for someone seeking tranquility and peace.

A 2* experience at 4* price. No need to visit This is not a 4* star hotel by US standards. Expectations are in the 2-3* range. Rooms are very small with no amenities and what you see in the photos online is only the entrance. Staff is indifferent, elevators do not work. Could not recommend.

Gift cards are no gift Do not purchase a gift card. They sell them on their site, but it has taken over a week to secure a booking using a gift card we received. Reservations told me they don’t accept gift cards and the issue had to be escalated to management. They finally made our reservation, but are charging us a higher rate than posted online.

Horrible hotel experience and inappropriately touched by staff. At reservation, I was offered a discounted rate plus a $50 food and beverage credit. Upon arrival, the check-in staff informed me this offer was not on my booking. They offered to check with the reservation team. I followed up twice and was consistently told the same information that they were checking with the reservation department. The reception I received from all staff, except the breakfast staff, was extremely cold and unhelpful. I was made to feel like a nuisance. I requested a heater and was informed none was available and they did not seem to care that I was unwell. I was unable to reach anyone on the phone so the staff suggested I use the app. To date, I have pending requests that have not been acknowledged. I ordered breakfast to my room on two occasions and both times the order was not acknowledged and subsequently cancelled long after I had left the hotel for the day. When I raised this with the hotel, the front desk stated that calling was the best way to make requests. I explained that they had previously advised me to use the app and they responded nonchalantly that it was technology and not always perfect. No apologies or acknowledgement of the inconvenience was offered. I also mentioned that no one answered the phone and they suggested I come down to reception to make my requests. In all my years of travelling, I have never experienced this at a hotel or resort. My experience was so negative that I shared it with the Minister of Tourism and the Visitor Experience Team. I also had an unpleasant experience at RW Tavern where I was touched inappropriately by a staff member. I went down to order water and orange juice and as he passed me, he poked me in my hip. It was very unnecessary and I was too stunned to say anything. The hotel and staff were terrible. I will leave a public review to warn others. The only helpful staff members were Aida and Sandra. They were amazing, welcoming and very helpful. The breakfast team as a whole were very pleasant.
