Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains: Hiking, Trout Fishing, and Historical Towns

The Poconos region of northeastern Pennsylvania accounts for some 2,400 square miles of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The area has been a popular vacation destination ever since Pennsylvania Quakers opened a hotel here on the Delaware River in 1829. Today, the Poconos draw more than 25 million annual visitors, thanks to year-round recreational opportunities and stunning natural scenery.

The warmer months are a great time to explore the region’s lakes and wooded hills. For spectacular hikes, check out Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, where you can trek to dramatic waterfalls or follow a 27-mile section of the historic Appalachian Trail. A handful of little towns full of antique shops and galleries nestle in the mountains, too. You'll find boutique wine galleries and historical mansions tucked away on country roads, including the late 19th-century Asa Packer Mansion, which is open for tours, in the borough of Jim Thorpe.

One of the most beautiful place. It has such a cozy feeling you don't feel like being in an inn. The owners are so friendly and the breakfast I had was divine.

Beware! No A/C! Our stay at the Brookview Manor Inn had a very rough start. Our reservation was prepaid so the Inn was expecting us, but after we checked in I was shocked to discover the A/C had not been turned on in our room. We arrived in the evening and wanted to go to bed, but it must have been at least 90 degrees in our third floor room at 10 pm. It took three hours for the room to cool down as the A/C was not very powerful. To top it off, during check-in the innkeeper asked us to turn off the A/C when we leave the room the next day, even though the forecast was 100 degrees and our room was on the top floor. The next morning I had to put my foot down and tell the innkeeper as we were leaving that we couldn't turn the A/C off because the room was close to 100 degrees the night before when we arrived. She actually began to argue, but her husband jumped in and said to just leave the A/C on. It is unthinkable an Inn operates this way in the midst of a July heatwave especially, but the A/C wasn't turned on in the bedrooms for arriving guests, and it is difficult to believe the innkeeper asks guests to turn the A/C off in their rooms in the middle of a heatwave. So if you are planning a summer stay I suggest contacting the Inn ahead of time and insisting the A/C is on before your arrival. After the A/C incident, everything went pretty smoothly and we enjoyed the rest of our stay, although there seems to be a problem with the electric short circuiting. The lights dim frequently, and during a shower the water shut off twice, then came back on within about 10 seconds, but it was all cold at first. The amount of food is generous and the chef obviously takes great care decorating his dishes. We were served plain scrambled eggs two days in a row, so the eggs could use a little dressing up. But overall the breakfast was very good and had a lot of variety with fruit, fresh muffins, waffles or French toast, sausage, and grits. It is an old house and there is no A/C in parts of the building. Since it's in the mountains I imagine the heat isn't usually a problem, but with the summer heatwave the foyer and halls were a bit warm at times. The breakfast room was air conditioned, though. The porch dining room uses open windows with screens, and there is a nice porch swing. The bed and breakfast doesn't have a traditional sitting room, however, only a foyer with a bar. It's impossible not to notice the carpet on the steps to the third floor was quite dirty and should be cleaned or replaced.

Well we enjoyed our stay there! We stayed two nights in July 2019. The room #5 was comfortable and everything worked. Breakfast each day was superb. We did not have dinner there. The second night we were there we came back to the Inn and was told that a severe thunderstorm had knocked out the power. But, they had a back-up generator and everything was working AC. lights, fans no problems. We found the personal touch of this B & B was an enjoyable change from staying in a hotel. The only issue was our room was on the second floor and I guess I'm getting too old to be carrying luggage up 32 steps. I needed the exercise anyway. Oh yeah, the price was very reasonable considering what you were getting.

Nicest people! Went to Brookview Manor for our anniversary weekend. Beautiful old home. Gaile and Marty were the nicest friendliest people and made us feel very welcome. Very nice bar and lounge. The restaurant Our Daughters Place is very nice and the food was amazing. Some advice, spring for the larger rooms. We peeked in them and wished we had gotten one. They are huge with separate sitting areas to hang out and watch TV. If we wanted to watch tv in our room we had to sit on the bed and our bathroom was very small. Loved the large porch swing and rocking chairs to just relax. Very quiet at night as well for good sleeping.
