Great Historic Stay with History and Heart (Just Bring Earplugs and an Open Mind) My girlfriend and I stayed over the 4th of July weekend while attending Comic Con in Denver. We checked in Thursday and stayed through Monday. The Brown Palace Hotel ended up being a great fit for our trip, especially since we enjoy history-rich hotels that have a story to tell. Let’s start with the staff. Top notch. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, helpful, and genuinely seemed to enjoy working there. Hal from the onsite restaurant deserves a special shoutout. He started our mornings with good conversation and even better breakfast recommendations. You seriously can’t go wrong with the burrito, French toast, pancakes, or biscuits and gravy. It was like breakfast roulette and every spin was a win. If you’re a history buff or just appreciate old architecture, this place has a lot to offer. Built in 1892, the hotel has all kinds of cool details from the ironwork to the wood paneling. There’s even a guided tour available and if you’ve got the time, check it out. You’ll get even more appreciation for where you’re staying. Now for the part where I give you the honest heads-up. If you’ve never stayed in a historic hotel before, know this: they weren’t exactly thinking about king beds, walk-in showers, and oversized elevators back in the 1800s. The rooms are small. The bathrooms are smaller. The elevators are... well, let’s just say cozy. If modern and spacious is your thing, you might be happier at Le Meridien or the Holiday Inn across the street. But if you love original woodwork and vintage vibes, this place delivers. There were a couple things that did bother us though. Our room faced the front of the hotel, and it was loud. And I mean LOUD. We were on the 5th floor, and it still felt like the street party was in our room. Definitely pack earplugs or request a quieter room if you're a light sleeper. The other issue was housekeeping. There was hair in the shower when we arrived, and it never got cleaned out. Water bottles weren’t restocked either, so we had to go down to the lobby to grab more a couple of times. Not a disaster, but definitely not what you expect from a place like this. Now for some tips. It’s a nice walking distance from the Denver Convention Center. Not so close that you're buried in the crowds, but close enough to make it easy. There are tons of restaurants and shops just a block away, and if you want to catch a baseball game, the ballpark isn’t far either. The drive to and from the airport took about 40 minutes, and if you’ve flown in or out of Denver before, you know to give yourself plenty of time. Definitely try the breakfast at the hotel, it’s a great way to start the day. And here’s a tip: the top two floors have larger rooms, but they’re “modernized,” meaning no view of the beautiful atrium or ability to hear the live music from the lobby. Personally, I’d take charm over square footage. All in all, it’s a solid 4 out of 5 for us. The housekeeping was the only real miss. We didn’t mind the smaller room or older furniture because we love places with history and charm. Breakfast was fantastic, the location worked well for Comic Con, and the stay was comfortable. We’d probably come back.

Classical charm My four-night stay at the Brown Palace was mostly lovely, except for the night the air conditioning gave out before a very hot day. The hotel is on the older side- but that’s the kind of hotel I enjoy, so it was uncomfortable for about 10 hours, but luckily the repairs were made in time for a last night of cool. I’ll definitely take the old-world charisma of the Brown Palace over the cookie-cutter blandness so common in modern hotels any day of the week. I had the pleasure of sampling the spa with my cousin for a day of massages and pedicures, and we felt very pampered by the kind staff. I was also able to try the afternoon tea with a friend who is a resident of Denver but had never been, so it was special for both of us. The entire staff at the hotel was very nice and accommodating. I really enjoyed having access to so much history about the hotel, from the handout to the text and photos scattered around the lobby and the entrance to the restaurants. My double queen room on the 9th floor was spacious and quiet, and although some of the furnishings were a bit dated, the architectural details speak to the comfort of grander times. I ordered room service one night and it arrived promptly and without any issues. I look forward to future stays and hope that if it is ever renovated, that it is done without losing the hotel’s numerous charms.
