Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains: Hiking, Trout Fishing, and Historical Towns

The Poconos region of northeastern Pennsylvania accounts for some 2,400 square miles of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The area has been a popular vacation destination ever since Pennsylvania Quakers opened a hotel here on the Delaware River in 1829. Today, the Poconos draw more than 25 million annual visitors, thanks to year-round recreational opportunities and stunning natural scenery.

The warmer months are a great time to explore the region’s lakes and wooded hills. For spectacular hikes, check out Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, where you can trek to dramatic waterfalls or follow a 27-mile section of the historic Appalachian Trail. A handful of little towns full of antique shops and galleries nestle in the mountains, too. You'll find boutique wine galleries and historical mansions tucked away on country roads, including the late 19th-century Asa Packer Mansion, which is open for tours, in the borough of Jim Thorpe.

Overcrowded, overpriced, overrated We recently stayed at Camelback Resort and, unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations. Pros: • Breakfast at the Lobby Buffet: Surprisingly good, with a wide variety of options and flavorful food. • Restaurant Staff: Friendly, helpful, and the most consistently positive part of the experience. • Aqua Park: The kids really enjoyed the water slides, and the Lazy River was a relaxing highlight. Cons: • Overcrowding: The aqua park is packed, mostly due to day guests. It was nearly impossible to find an available chair. • Accommodations: The beds were extremely uncomfortable, and the pull-out sofa was a joke — more like a medieval torture device than a sleeping option. • Cleanliness: The floor in the buffet restaurant was sticky enough to make your shoes literally stick to it. Room was dusty and definitely needs some attention. • Mountain Adventure Booking: The booking process is a mess. You’re forced to reserve online, which is slow and frustrating. The tickets are time-sensitive to the minute — they won’t let you in even 5 minutes early — and slots are every 30 minutes, making it a headache if you’re even slightly off-schedule. • Pet-Friendly Pitfall: While it’s nice that the resort allows pets, be aware it can lead to unpleasant surprises. We had a first-floor room with a patio and stepped in dog waste — clearly not all guests clean up after their pets. • Extra Fees: Be prepared for daily additional charges: a resort fee, parking fee, and multiple taxes (we counted at least three). These add up quickly and make feel even more overpriced. Bottom Line: While the water attractions are fun for kids, the experience overall is stressful, crowded, and simply not worth the price. There are better-managed, better-valued family resorts out there.

Best resort I have gone too The best part of my stay was breakfast dinner and water park and silent disco a little bit of everything. The rooms were very nice and clean. If I could change or improve anything possibly some of the prices of things there so everybody could experience more options to do things some things were a little to pricey
