Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains: Hiking, Trout Fishing, and Historical Towns

The Poconos region of northeastern Pennsylvania accounts for some 2,400 square miles of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The area has been a popular vacation destination ever since Pennsylvania Quakers opened a hotel here on the Delaware River in 1829. Today, the Poconos draw more than 25 million annual visitors, thanks to year-round recreational opportunities and stunning natural scenery.

The warmer months are a great time to explore the region’s lakes and wooded hills. For spectacular hikes, check out Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, where you can trek to dramatic waterfalls or follow a 27-mile section of the historic Appalachian Trail. A handful of little towns full of antique shops and galleries nestle in the mountains, too. You'll find boutique wine galleries and historical mansions tucked away on country roads, including the late 19th-century Asa Packer Mansion, which is open for tours, in the borough of Jim Thorpe.

Last Weekend Before Back to School with Grandson and His Friends Check in staff were very friendly and helpful. I appreciated the text when our room was ready. Disappointed that 1/3 of the indoor waterslides were not operational. Kids were disappointed after an hour of the indoor slides with so many not open. I had to pay additional for the outdoor waterpark which I understand that would be an additional charge, but only to find out that 1/3 of those slides were not operational. Not sure I find it acceptable to pay full price for 2/3 the service. I assume it was staffing related or maybe college kids going back to college that worked the park over the summer. But regardless, that isn’t the customer’s issue. In the morning, my wristband would not let me in our room. I go to the front desk and they advised they locked me out because I didn’t have a credit card on file. This was totally false or a failure on the checkin person. When I checked in, I DID put a card on file, she explained of the $100 hold and that I would be charged for parking. I clearly remember putting my card in, signing and listening to the list of ADDITIONAL charges, such as parking in a lot to stay on your property and an additional resort fee. Not sure locking us out of a room that cost as much as it did, to make sure to stop by the front deck which I would have done when I checked out is the correct way to handle. More appropriate would have been a phone call to the phone on file, or a text which I received from your front desk when my room was ready. Curious when I had my wristband activated for my room, why that front desk person didn’t mention I didn’t have a card on file….BUT I DID. We enjoyed our time but doubt we will go back as the return on our investment for good family fun was not worth the price and all the additional fees.

Kids had a great time but….. Overall my family had fun. The restaurants and indoor and other activities were wonderful. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. My issues was that the room wasn’t clean enough there were old blood stains on sheets which is disgusting. Pillows had a weird odor that was also unpleasant. People running through the halls very late at night screaming and cursing. For the couple of nights there I hardly slept. Which took away the relaxation aspect of the trip.
