Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains: Hiking, Trout Fishing, and Historical Towns

The Poconos region of northeastern Pennsylvania accounts for some 2,400 square miles of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The area has been a popular vacation destination ever since Pennsylvania Quakers opened a hotel here on the Delaware River in 1829. Today, the Poconos draw more than 25 million annual visitors, thanks to year-round recreational opportunities and stunning natural scenery.

The warmer months are a great time to explore the region’s lakes and wooded hills. For spectacular hikes, check out Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, where you can trek to dramatic waterfalls or follow a 27-mile section of the historic Appalachian Trail. A handful of little towns full of antique shops and galleries nestle in the mountains, too. You'll find boutique wine galleries and historical mansions tucked away on country roads, including the late 19th-century Asa Packer Mansion, which is open for tours, in the borough of Jim Thorpe.

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND MIND. DO NOT STAY HERE! I am here to simply provide details of my experience so other families and first time visitors can make an informed decision before paying the amount of money you pay for a subpar experience, where your safety is at risk!!! You might be better off trying Kalahari, Great Wolf Lodge, or anything other than Camelback. First and foremost, my car was vandalized on their property, after paying $25 a night for parking which their website claims is to “ensure appropriate and safe parking for all of our guests, monitor/control the flow of traffic.” The damages to my car were over $1500. This could be your family next time!!!!! A day past guest (with a criminal record) was allowed to come on the property with a weapon, slash my tires (all caught on video) and the resort pleaded ignorance saying they had no information for who this guest was or the people in his party because they don’t track that. Seems like a significant safety concern being there are children everywhere at this resort. Kind of scary right?! The truly sad part is this was our first time to the Poconos/Camelback resort. First night of our stay, over 4 rides in the waterpark were non-operational. Camelback does not list this information on their website like Kalahari does, so this was a huge surprise when we arrived after already booking a 2 night stay. Also- their Italian restaurant was closed for renovations, also not listed anywhere. The website just said it was open and you could make reservations online. Since that was not the case we had to drive off the resort grounds for a nice dinner the first night there. By the morning of our second night I had went to the front desk asking if we could cancel our second night, because for the money we had paid, the experience was not living up to what Camelback claims. I was told to talk to the Pool Manager at Aquatopia, because the front desk could not cancel my reservation since it was already booked. When I went to talk to the pool manager the pool manager specifically said “sounds like you are getting a run around because we don’t handle anything when a customer isn’t happy with their stay” so the pool manager had to take me back to the front desk. At that time (which was 10 till 2pm) the front desk finally said if we could get out by 2pm, they could cancel our reservation and refund us. That left us 10 minutes to get back up to the 4th floor, pack a room up and luggage, hustle out and try to book a stay at one of the other resorts. That would have been nice to know at 8am when we asked, instead of getting a run around, feeling like we just didnt matter to anyone. Then to make it all worse, since we couldn’t get out of the reservation because of the run around and timing, we stayed the second night (again, at least 4 rides were non operational) woke up, went to leave and came out to a car that had been damaged. When I tell you this is a terrifying feeling, it really truly is. You feel helpless, scared, wonder why me, and then the panic sets in of how the heck are we getting home (living over 3 hours away). Now- add to the fact that we have not received any follow ups from Camelback, their insurance company, we’ve received no answers regarding the vandalism or receiving any compensation back from being victims on THEIR PROPERTY!!!!!!! I have sent multiple responses back to their “insurance company” with no responses back. Real professional right? We have never felt like we cared SO LESS to someone, or a business EVER. They don’t care about you or your family, JUST THEIR MONEY! I am leaving this review so others can protect their property, their family, and choose another resort that maybe has better safety measures in place. I think at the very least, a resort should know who is coming and going on their property, especially when they are serving alcohol, and there are children around. What if this individual had brandished that knife around children???? Please, save your money and try any other resort. I would stay far away from Camelback. Or take a gamble with your family and property. Just remember, I am out 1500 in car damages, 50 in parking fees, plus the money spent at the resort for a truly terrible, horrendous first experience in the Poconos. Would not return. 10/10

Summer vacation We traveled here for a summer vacation. Stayed 3 nights. We have 3 kids, plus myself and my husband. The hotel is very nice. I did not notice dust or dirt in the room as mentioned in previous reviews. Things seemed very clean and everything was as expected. Food was good at the hotel, VERY expensive breakfast buffet (for 2 adults and 1 child; 2 of the kids are under 3 years old so no charge; 100$). We only ate there one of the mornings as a result. We did go out for several meals as the options are somewhat limited beyond pizza and burgers. We appreciated that the water park life guards were friendly. Hotel staff is all very young, many of them who were orchestrating activities and events were not the happiest to be working there you could tell. Several in particular did not interact with our children at all even at “interactive” stations like the donut decorating and a sand art activity. We loved the water park. It is clean and things seemed to be well kept. Not overly crowded. We did also go to camel beach one day, which is laid out very strangely: it’s like they decided as an afterthought to plop what they could of a water park in the middle of the mountain along with the ski equipment. It was fine, but hard to navigate. Major complaint is housekeeping. As all hotels have done , they do not come every day to service your room. But if you stay multiple evenings that means you have to take care of emptying your own trash and request towels each day. Just very annoying to pay 1100$ for 3 nights and be emptying my own garbage into a can in the hallway near the elevators and freshening our own room. Resorts should return to daily housekeeping unless you request otherwise. Just my opinion. Overall this is a great resort, very fun for families with kids. The lazy river is great, as is the “bucket” kids area, and the wave pool. Water in the pools is warm, and the water park itself is warm, which makes being there very pleasant. We will certainly be back again!
