Hotel at a Glance: Cape Ann’s Marina Resort

Fishing has been a way of life on Cape Ann for more than four centuries. The area’s tuna boats are a familiar sight at Cape Ann’s Marina Resort, which overlooks the spot where the Annisquam River flows into the Gloucester Harbor. Guests can launch their own Atlantic expeditions from the resort’s boat slips, or simply enjoy waterfront views from their balconies.

  • Year-round oasis: The Aqua Room features a 6,000-square-foot atrium with a heated indoor pool and Jacuzzi featuring a full-service pool bar and TVs.
  • Fresh seafood like lobster rolls and clam chowder occupies the menu at Mile Marker One Restaurant & Bar, which overlooks the Annisquam River and marina docks.
  • In each room: free WiFi, along with a microwave and a mini fridge
  • Seafaring stars: Guests may spot boat crews from the National Geographic TV show Wicked Tuna.

Gloucester, Massachusetts: Lighthouses, Humpback Whales, and Artist Colonies

About 35 miles northeast of Boston, the fishing community of Gloucester is home to the country’s oldest working seaport of Cape Ann. Here, you can visit the half dozen lighthouses that stand sentry over the Atlantic Ocean coastline, some of which date back to the 1780s. These lighthouses aren’t just for show: some believe the Cape Ann Light Station on nearby Thacher Island saved the life of President Woodrow Wilson. On a particularly foggy evening in 1919, a passenger liner carrying President Wilson narrowly avoided a coastal collision after the lighthouse sounded its foghorn blare.

Gloucester was thrust into the national spotlight after Sebastian Junger authored The Perfect Storm, the true story of an epic nor’easter that hammered the fishing fleet and Cape Ann in 1991. The 2000 film starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg was shot on location in Gloucester’s picturesque harbors.

Nice clean room, the bed was one of the most comfortable beds and spacious that I have been in. Great room on the end, nice and quiet with a real nice view, very restful.

Whale watch and weekend away We had reservations for 6-14 through 6-16. When we tried to check in, we were told they had no rooms available. We didn't receive call letting us know the the hotel was booked for Friday night. The manager called another hotel to see if they had a room available. They did. We went to The Castle Inn and spent night there. Saturday afternoon, we were able to check into hotel. View is great. I asked if we could get a room on 3rd floor which they did. Beds were comfortable, room was great but did I already say 'the view from deck was amazing?? Check in is at 2 and checkout is at 11 am so loved that. We had breakfast downstairs which was great and our waitress was great.

A decent place to stay. A small room with a very comfortable bed. Spotless. Fridge, microwave. Everything worked well. This was very affordable for the area, but you sacrifice all luxury.. we were only there for one night, so no issue for us. The bathroom needed a serious upgrade, but was very clean and had everything you need. Nice marina view. Restaurant was good. If you like to walk to shops and town center, it’s a bit far. If you have a boat, you can dock it here.

Property condition is misrepresented I’m sure this “resort” was a real beauty back in her hey day. The hotel (which honestly is more of a motel) is undergoing what I presume are renovations but honestly, they look cheaply done and root issues don’t seem to be addressed. I stayed here for one night and quite frankly didn’t want to stay at all once we pulled into the property. We unfortunately could not find another room on short notice. The photos on the site are not representative of the actual property and room conditions. Our room’s carpet was so worn there was a hole through it. The furniture was so banged up and broken. The walls were cracked in many places. But perhaps the worst part, was the smell. We tried to air the room out but the smell of mold was so overwhelming. The front desk staff was about as welcoming as the sad run down motel itself. I do not recommend this place and had the motel been properly represented in the business profile page we would not have stayed here. 100% not worth the $$$, this was more of a $50 a night room.
