Jefferson City, Missouri: Rich History and German Heritage on the Missouri River

The iconic image of Jefferson City is a marriage of its historical and natural spirit: the beautiful domed Capitol and the rushing Missouri River. It makes sense, considering the Capitol sits on the banks of the river, a towering structure resembling an ancient Roman basilica with 40-foot columns to mark the entrance. On its third floor, nature and history meet again in the three-wall mural, A Social History of Missouri. It tells the story of Missouri’s pioneer days up to the rise of St. Louis and Kansas City.

On Jefferson City’s south side, the neighborhood of Old Munichburg looks like Old World Germany. It has historic churches, Bavarian-style brick buildings, and pubs. Steps from Old Munichburg is the Missouri River, which draws visitors looking to canoe and catch catfish. Near the boat-access point, signs indicate how far other cities are down the river, from Rocheport (43 mi.) to Three Forks, Montana (2,197 mi.). Another popular spot for fishing is nearby Binder Lake, which is filled with bass and bluegill.

The Terrible No Good Stay of our Lifetime. * The coffee maker in the room had the wrong tray so we could not use it. * The TV didn't work in the front room and they were unable to fix it or replace it. * Plastic wrap was fused to the smore alarm presumably by a smoker that didn't want to set it off. * Shower was visibly dirty. * The ice machine on our floor wasn't working and had to trek all around the hotel to get to one that did. * AC unit in the ceiling leaked water on the floor. * Maid service didn't come as requested for all three days we were there. * We were moved to another room. It was worse. Moved to a third room, it was better, but found out in the morning of our third day that the shower handle was broken and inoperable. Couldn't take a shower before heading to the airport. * Plates in the breakfast buffet were dirty/wet. * The lobby fountain was dirty. In summary, it was the worst hotel experience we have ever had. The staff admitted that they agreed but could do nothing about it. It was disappointing as the photos on the web of the place are nice. It has potential to be better with millions of dollars in renovations and better management.

DISGUSTING hotel. Stay FAR away Room was filthy and unusable because of construction cart, plumbing off! This was our room upon check in! And they tried to charge us $20 to check in early for THIS?? I seriously do not even know how on earth this is legal but I cannot even imagine that it is.

Stay anywhere else We were here for a conference. It took over an hour to check in - several other people were experiencing issues, and several conference attendees had rooms that were flooded, actively leaking from the floor above, or not clean when they got to their room. This site has been struggling for years but this will be the last time I think I’ll ever stay here.
