Topeka, Kansas: Capital City with Legendary Past

Topeka lies along the Kansas River, about an hour west of Kansas City. It’s home to the Kansas State Capitol, a classical stone building topped with a massive copper dome. The structure is well worth a visit, both for the history and notable works of art found here. These include a pair of famous murals by John Steuart Curry and a bronze statue entitled Ad Astra. Depicting a Kansa warrior, the piece takes its name from the state motto, Ad astra per aspera—“To the stars through difficulties.”

You can learn more about the state’s past at the Kansas Museum of History, which displays artifacts from the Kansa, Osage, and Pawnee tribes, as well as the oldest surviving locomotive from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

One of the most famous names in Topeka history is Oliver Brown, the plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case that ended segregation in American public schools. The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site is housed in the formerly segregated Monroe Elementary School. The building has been restored to its 1954 appearance and contains numerous self-guided exhibits, including a 30-minute film that chronicles the years leading up to the case.

Terrible Topeka Do not stay here. Could not check in until almost 7 pm because room wasn’t ready. Restaurant only open for breakfast so had to eat offsite. Room wasn’t clean. Hair on toilet and shower walls. Questionable stain on bed spread. Sheets possibly from previous guest. None of the pictures are recent on their website. If I have another conference in Topeka I will stay offsite and drive every day to conference.

DO NOT STAY HERE - EVER! I went to Hotel Topeka as part of a work conference - and it was the WORST experience I had ever had in a hotel. Most of the conference checked in on Wednesday; a majority of those couldn't get into their rooms until after 4pm. When they got in their rooms, there were no sheets, blankets, etc in the room. My boss wasn't able to check in until after 7:30 - and his room was dirty, and had stuff in the fridge from the previous guest. It rained on Friday. and the sunroof in the lobby was dripping on people. One conference guest checked in on Thursday; 30 minutes later, they checked somebody else into his room which was very awkward. After one guest checked out, the hotel tried to add more money to the tab; then did another $500 charge. They never communicated with the guest that this happened - the guest found out when their card was rejected at a gas station. It's been 4 days - they still don't have their money back. They were told "hopefully by Tuesday." Oh. And I found a 'Towel Dollar" in my towels. I never trust hotel towels- I bring my own. The last day I was putting the towels on the ground to be cleaned and this dollar fell out with two tally marks. The hotel didn't even comment. I also had a large dusty handprint on my door. Oh, and every single time I left my room, I had to get a new key because mine stopped working. Honestly, the list goes on - it was a horrible experience. I'm still waiting on a call from management.....

Never again If I could give no stars I would..Staying at the hotel was the worst experience I’ve ever had. This hotel reminds me of the show Bates Motel. The front desk staff wasn’t a help. They ran out of towels, the rooms are highly outdated. I woke up with bite marks over hands and arms. Checked the sheets, there was a bedbug alive and moving. Please note I did check the sheets and spread when I first arrived. Went to the front desk, they weren’t apologetic, no empathy no sympathy no nothing. Just we can move your room.. at this point I’m ready to go b/c you just care about my money.. never again will I stay here!!

Bad... Big dog show at the Expo Center last weekend. Learned just before arrival that the AC was not working effectively in the Hotel Topeka. Called front desk to confirm. Clerk said they would not know whether or not I would have an AC room until I checked in. His answer after I asked if it was true that the AC did not work, was: "It is working as well as it can..." Never again!!! They slapped some lipstick on the face of the lobby, but the rooms were so bad that guests had to buy their own fans and sheets!!!
