Resort at a Glance: Catalonia Royal Tulum

Nestled between clear tropical waters, mangrove trees, and lush jungles, one might think that Catalonia Royal Tulum is the calmest resort they can fathom. While the adults-only property is designed to help vacationers unwind, that doesn’t come at the expense of excitement. The 4-star resort on Mexico’s Riviera Maya invites guests to spend an afternoon in the sprawling pool complex, try their hand at kayaking along the beach, and enjoying evening entertainment including live music in the lobby bar. Guests have the chance to sway in a hammock on a Caribbean beach and sip margaritas by the pool, all without hearing a peep from little ones.

  • Relax in recently remodeled rooms close to the beach. Plush bathrobes and slippers make it easy to lounge in bed, or take in the view from each room’s balcony or furnished terrace (privileged rooms only).
  • The spa experience features a unisex spa as well as a women-only water zone equipped with a sauna, steam bath, and Jacuzzi tub.
  • Let your inner child out during one of the resort’s exciting activities such as a paddleboarding experience in the sea, watergym sessions, dance lessons on the beach, or pool volleyball.
  • Try the margaritas: The poolside tequila bar lets swimmers enjoy cocktails in the sun, while “Las Margaritas” in the hotel lobby sports a menu of Caribbean margaritas.
  • And the cuisine: Over nine restaurants cook up dishes that range from classic pizzas to avant-garde Mexican food.
  • Experience a Rauxa dinner show: A cabaret and burlesque show featuring acrobats, dancers, singers, and musicians performing live music.

Mexico’s Riviera Maya: Rich with History and Tropical Calm

Just south of Cancún, the Riviera Maya is a nearly 80-mile stretch of Caribbean coastline fronted by towns rich in Mexican culture. For some of the area’s best beaches, clubs, and snorkeling reefs, head to the rapidly growing city of Playa del Carmen. Farther south, Tulum sits on a perch of rocky bluffs and is better known for ancient ruins, including temples and a cliff-side castle. The inhabitants of Tulum—which means “walled” in the aboriginal language—first erected the city’s outer fortress to protect themselves from belligerent invaders. Today, the wall guards the archaeological zone, beginning with an entryway of two corbel arches and a limestone house built over an underwater cave.

Swimming in the secret caves isn’t allowed, but a scenic drive south of Playa del Carmen brings you to the Yucatán Peninsula’s legendary limestone cenotes, freshwater sinkholes created by an underground river system. At the Cenote Cristalino, you can jump from terraced outcroppings into an exposed pool or go snorkeling in underwater caves. You can also watch locals expertly flip, dive, and synchronously cannonball into the clear water at this popular weekend hangout.

Great Place - 5 star beach This is a really lovely resort and one i will always fondly remember. The staff were so friendly and always seemed so happy to be working there. There were two highlights for us, firstly the path leading to the pool has all kinds of wildlife there especially the coati's who are so cute and then the Iguanas who usually just take a nap in the middle of the path, the way they all coexist together is amazing. Secondly the beach is probably one of the best beaches i have been to it was stunning and the sea was so warm and so clear it was great to spend everyday on the beach and there was no shortage of beds. If you head right on the beach and walk to the end and back it is about a mile and a nice way to get some steps in after a big breakfast :) The food was great and there was a lot of variety. Our favorite was the Rauxa restaurant and show and the Grill restaurant. Rooms were of good standard with comfy beds and great air con. The guys at the Scuba Hut were also great and spoke good english, we did a snorkelling trip and also a scuba dive trip and saw an amazing amount of fish. I would recommend this hotel Keep up the good work

Superb Entertainment Team make this resort amazing This hotel is a hidden gem in the Riviera Maya made great by an amazing Entertainment team. The reason we return again and again is primarily the entertainment team. This team are so professional, experienced and provide a great number of activities to suit all ages, abilities and preferences. They go above and beyond every single day to ensure everyone has the best holiday possible; taking the time to chat and find out what’s important to you. There is no pressure to join in anything but just the right amount of encouragement if you want to. We have been to many resorts and never had a team like them; it definitely feels that they are only happy if you are having a good time and will do anything for you. A huge thank you to Gio, Paulina, Diego, Charlie, Sham-ed, Gonzalo and Paul for the best time once again. The hotel is located on the most beautiful beach and we thoroughly enjoyed the free water sports and catamaran trips provided by the hotel. Marco is an excellent captain and a really great guy. Should you have any issues with anything else while on holiday I would advise contacting Lenis in guest services (office beside the pool and in reception). She will efficiently manage and resolve any issues and is just lovely. Customer service is great in this hotel but Quezebel and Angeles in the buffet are exceptional.

Fifth trip to CRT but we shall not go back. Our fifth visit after our wedding here last year. We know the place very well. It’s our second home, our little bit of paradise…or so it was… The good. The staff are generally excellent and are always happy to go the extra mile. The beach and snorkeling are incredible, second to none. The grounds are beautiful as are the animals. The bad Food is very hit and miss. You can rarely have the same thing twice and for it to be similar. Starters sometimes served with mains!? Some food cold and inedible. Loud beach club next door banging out the same tune for hours every weekend. Nothing the hotel can do but it’s extremely annoying. The rooms. Had to move twice. One extremely noisy fan and one extremely noisy neighbor. Far from ideal. The ugly. I fell sick in the first week. I am still sick almost two weeks after returning home to the UK. It completely ruined my holiday and the rest of my summer. I’ve had several doctor’s appointments and I am antibiotics for a serious bacterial infection. I reported my illness to the hotel and was asked if I wanted any special food prepared. What I wanted was my health intact and my summer holiday that cost us £8000 to be enjoyable. Upon checkout, our private hire transfer arrived early. They sent for me, BY NAME, to our room. They had all my details, so we had absolutely no reason to doubt their authenticity. We later learnt, having received several calls and emails from our private transfer company, that we did not show up for our transfer. This other company turned up with our details and off we went. As of yet, CRT have not given us a reasonable and valid explanation as to how they had our details. I’m happy to edit this review if they do so. Overall. I’m writing this having spent another day of my summer in bed. I will never return which makes me feel extremely sad and also angry. We were married just last year on the beach in the hotel. This was our anniversary. I have spoken to many others on Facebook with similar if not identical illness issues from CRT. it’s not a coincidence, it’s not just travel diarrhea. I have opened up a complaint with TUI. Pointless process I’d imagine having spoken to those with similar experiences. Sorry CRT, but you have badly let us down.
