500 snack bar Great drinks at the 500 snack bar, as well as stellar service. I was treated with respect and courtesy, even given a free cup of their special juice upon arrival. The bartender was so kind as to answer all my questions and be patient with my bad Spanish, I’d recommend anybody who appreciates great service to go here.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: 15th-Century City with Vibrant Nightlife

Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's capital, is recognized as the first European city in the New World. It claims to have the first castle, the first monastery, the first paved road, and even the first sewer system ever built in the Americas. In the Colonial Zone, you'll find the city's oldest sites, including Alcázar de Colón, a palace built for Christopher Columbus's son Diego. The Colonial Zone also holds the city's first church, the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, and one of the oldest surviving European fortresses, which was constructed on the waterfront in the early 16th century to protect the city from pirate attacks.

During the day, street vendors at the city's El Mercado Modelo sell everything from fresh mangoes to jewelry and carved wooden figurines. When the sun goes down, head to Malecón, an oceanfront avenue lined with bars and discos that pump out merengue music until late.

Things have changed… / Las cosas han cambiado… So I want to start off by saying I have been to this hotel a number of times. First time going was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and then a couple of other times. First time around I can say I loved the place, great service and even greater staff! This time around I was there for about a week, June 30th to July 5th. All this to say things have definitely changed! I understand there were so few guests when I went initially and the attention to detail and care was greater because of this. Even though I had gone before I had never actually gone to the hotels restaurant: Filigrana. This is where I would run into a very unpleasant interaction with one of their hostess’, I believe her name is Karla. I went with a friend and we entered the restaurant and there was no one immediately available to seat us and so we went in and one of their other employees seated us. A little while later Karla showed up and awkwardly stood behind me where I was seated to talk to me. She said she wasn’t available when we first came in to ask me what my room number was, I jokingly told her thats fine but I wasn’t sure how that was my problem, she must’ve not taken the joke very well as she took on a nasty attitude and demanded I give her the room number, I don’t typically respond very well to demands. Her attitude then turned into a very confrontational and also threatening tone as she stated “Oh, so you aren’t going to give me the room number”, mind you this is all while I am turned around on my seat, I got tired of this and turned around and said “Not with that attitude!”, She then walked away and didn’t approach me again. I was pretty upset and ready to leave the restaurant, I even considered maybe cancelling my stay and just going elsewhere, I don’t take kindly to threats. Luckily a waitress by the name of Roxanna came to their aid and defused the situation for everyone. She said not to worry that she would be taking care of us moving forward and that all would be well. I decided to stay and see how things went. Roxanna constantly came back to check in with us and to talk to us about the restaurants history, the hotel, the surroundings, recommended dishes, drinks, etc. She was very pleasant and caring and she quickly made us forget about the uncomfortable issue we had when first seated. I didn’t make any formal complaints at the time and moved on for the time being. I kept on coming back to the restaurant and was typically greeted by Roxanna with a big smile and she would take care of me most of the time. She seems to be a very happy and uplifting individual and she kind of rescued/saved the rest of my trip with her attitude, for that, I thank her! Another situation that happened was that I was staying during the Beryl Hurricane and my room started to have a leak which turned into some puddles/flooding. The staff apologized for this and upgraded me to a premium room free of cost (See the pictures I have attached!) which was great! I did make a formal complaint on the day I was checking out of the hotel about the situation at the restaurant and I hope that they make things better there as I do wish to and plan to return whenever I stay in Santo Domingo! My recommendation to the administration is, don’t let bad employees give the hotel a bad reputation because of their behavior, make corrections where you need to and reward those other employees that are very helpful and keep your customers coming back!

Catalonia stay We have stayed in the hotel for several times. In general we like the experience. A very good location, big parking, great view. There were some errors with the price for the stay during check in. Sad that it happens, but must admit that the staff managed to resolve everything. The rooms are fine, nothing extraordinary, beds are big and comfortable, unfortunately bathrooms aren’t as clean as you may expect. There are a lot of common areas where you can relax, a beautiful pool area. What we love the most about this hotel is the breakfast and the restaurant with an incredible vibe and view over the Caribbean Sea.

Avoid like the plague Terrible service. Got there at noon, said the room would not be ready until 3, waited at the pool - food was a 2/5, ordered one thing and got another. Room was not ready until much later. Was offered late checkout and a beer for my troubles. Spend your money somewhere else.
