Santa Cruz, California: Seaside Town with Free-Spirit Attitude

Located about an hour and a half south of San Francisco, Santa Cruz is an eccentric coastal town on Monterey Bay’s northern fringe. The downtown street performers frequently transform Pacific Avenue into a stage with dancing, drumming, and historical reenactments of the famed Lincoln-Douglas mud-wrestling matches. The fun continues at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a seaside amusement park home to thrill rides and a carousel from 1911. From the top of the Ferris wheel, you can take in bird’s-eye views of surfers catching waves in the Pacific.

Overrated & Disappointing Room The room was okay, the beds were very comfortable. However, the bathroom was small and cramped. The phone didn’t work when I tried to use it, and the televisions were outdated with no streaming capabilities, only standard channels. Pool The pool was crowded, and there were no towels available. No one was attending to the pool area, and we had to go to the poolside bar to get towels. Unfortunately, we had to wait a long time because the bartender was chatting with a guest. There is a section for adults 18 and over, which is nice, but I had my eleven-year-old granddaughter with me. The jacuzzi in the under-18 section was filled with toddlers, leaving no room for us. Not that we wanted to get in with all the little ones, who knows what’s in the water. Room Service Room service never delivered our order, and there was no communication or explanation. The next day, I tried to call room service, but the phone in the room didn’t work. I called room service from my cell phone, but it went directly to the front desk. The front desk transferred me to room service, and it went straight to a voicemail box that was full. Spa The Spa is what brought me to three stars, my facial was phenomenal (Kristina) and had I known there were so many amenities within the spa I would have scheduled my appointment for when I had more time. The View The restaurant was okay, but the inside was dimly lit, and my silverware was dirty. It took the waitress forever to get back to us so I could ask for clean silverware. She forgot about the silverware, and our appetizers were served without any small plates. The family started eating the appetizers with their silverware directly out of the bowl, but I didn’t have any clean silverware yet. Overall, The Chaminade was a disappointment especially for the price point. If it wasn’t for the surrounding forest and local beaches, I wouldn’t recommend it at all. This was supposed to be an enjoyable celebration for my son’s graduation from UC Santa Cruz. Our family deserved much better, especially for the price.

Perfect for Business Brunch was absolutely delicious _ The business conference room was perfect when meeting in a group. The set up was perfect with AV devices.

Another Amazing Chaminade Stay I stayed in room 708 with my wife and 3 children from June 8-13. We have stayed at the Chaminade before and enjoyed it just as much a third time around. The reviews I read on Trip Advisor going into our stay were negative and I really don't get it. Someone mentioned a poorly maintained trail system, bugs in their bed and loud sleeping conditions. None of this was valid. Any hotel or resort you stay at has noise. If it bothers you so much, wear ear plugs, buy a sound machine or better yet, keep your vibe away from those trying to enjoy themselves. This resort is on the top of a hill and surrounded by forest (which hosts its own trails! That is extraordinary). A destination like this is rare and if a bug wanders in from the surrounding wilderness, squash it. My goodness what is wrong with people. The workout facility is top notch and the restaurant is wonderful. Not only does it sit upon a perch with an amazing view of the ocean, but the food is tasty and reasonably priced. The kids meal is only $10 and I would highly recommend the sliders or chicken nuggets. Grab a margarita and take in the view and live music (which is free and different every night). Overall, I was extremely happy with my stay and I am glad I didn't let the end of May reviews sway my opinion. Perhaps a lesson going forward with all the F.I.s in the world. See you soon Chaminade _
