Hotel at a Glance: Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina

The centerpiece of this resort is its private marina, set along the picturesque Cooper River. It’s an ideal spot for launching fishing excursions: an 881-pound blue marlin—the largest ever snagged in South Carolina—was caught here. Once you’ve packed your tackle box away, you can relax on the resort’s manmade beach and gaze at Fort Sumter and the Charleston skyline as sailboats and yachts come into the harbor.

  • Locally sourced cuisine such as lobster ravioli is on the menu at Charleston Harbor Fish House.
  • Guest rooms feature a nautical motif and overlook the property or the harbor; some have balconies.
  • Start the day right: This Getaway includes daily breakfast for two.
  • Stay fit: Work out in the onsite fitness center, rent bikes, or swim in the pool.
  • Tee off next door at the William Byrd–designed Patriots Point Links; its 17th hole features an island green and is considered one of the area’s best par 3s.
  • Visit Charleston: Drive just 6 miles, or take a trolley or water taxi.

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina: Shallow Saltwater Bays and Naval History near Charleston

Situated near downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant boasts a number of shallow bays and creeks. The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum houses the USS Yorktown, an antisubmarine aircraft carrier. Visitors can explore the flight deck, engine room, and wardroom of this 888-foot centerpiece, or check out any of 25 eclectic aircraft.

Just across the harbor is Charleston, recently named one of the country’s best historic destinations by U.S. News & World Report. Georgian mansions line the waterfront, the spires of colonial-era churches punctuate the skyline, and horse-drawn carriages frequently clop along the city’s cobblestone streets. National historic landmarks in town include the Battery & White Point Gardens, a living Civil War museum with Confederate cannons and views of Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, and a double-parked Camry.

More recently, Charleston has merged its Old South identity with a strong arts-and-culture scene. The streets are lined with top-tier art galleries and antique stores, and you can catch live jazz performances at night. Step out onto King Street to browse third-generation clothiers who have set up shop in historic buildings. The city’s reputation as a major culinary destination has been reaffirmed by the James Beard Foundation, which has named a different Charleston chef the best in the southeast three out of the past four years.

Worst Top Rated Hotel Experience This was frankly one of the worst hotel experiences for an allegedly top rated hotel. I have never written a review, but my experience was so unforgettably bad I figured there was a first for everything! To start with, the hotel check in staff knew little to nothing about Charleston or its surrounding areas so were unable to provide any recommendations. Information in the lobby was limited to a paltry pamphlet about zip lining! The room lacked any internet connection and it took two engineers an hour late at night to figure out how to set up an extender to get it working. The bathroom lacked water pressure, so again engineering had to be called. The curtains were stained and had parts missing and the room was engineered with a master switch that made no sense and were were not alerted on check in. The Tiki Bar had some of the most "ho hum" unfriendly bar tenders and basic food orders took nearly 40 minutes to arrive. The fitness center desperately needs an update and wasn't stocked with any cleaning supplies so everyone who sweat on the equipment just left it there to dry! The location was average and required driving to and from Charleston - but that's not the hotel's fault. On the plus side, having a pool, particularly one as nice as the one at the Beach Club was a real premium that close to Charleston as I suspect most of the top rated hotels in Historic Charleston did not have such a luxury. Considering the heat and humidity in the area during July/August the pool was a wonderful treat. The only downside is the bartenders did not seem to have any issues overindulging some bar flies.

One night family stay I visited one night this week with my kids after enjoying this hotel 5 years ago with my husband. I wanted my kids to enjoy the wonderful experience we had on our first trip. Honestly, it was an expensive mistake. We woke up to the pools being closed as the storm prep was beginning. No one let us know in advance and there was no mercy shown at check-out. The hotel room was average and the bathroom door was difficult to close. The perks to the hotel: location, view, pool and free coffee and ice cream. However, for such an expensive one night stay, I was so discouraged, and I will never return. I do not recommend this hotel when there are many other great hotels nearby.

Girls Trip The location of the resort was nice, not too far from the airport (about 25 minutes) and close to restaurants and shopping. The resort offers a shuttle that runs to downtown so that was convenient and our drivers gave a nice history of Charleston during the drive. The hotel itself was clean but not as grand as we expected (not like the photos). Our room may have just been an "older room". The AC was so loud and made a loud banging noise every time it kicked on and that kept waking us up all night so we didn't really feel rested... which is what our girls trip was for. So that was disappointing. But overall the resort was clean and the staff was friendly. The pools were nice and the view from our balcony was beautiful.
