Hotel at a Glance: Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel

Built in 1908, Chattanooga’s Terminal Station served for decades as the city’s grand first impression, welcoming visitors with a soaring central dome adorned with brass chandeliers. Over the years, the station welcomed the likes of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt. After closing in the 1970s, the depot was eventually transformed into the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel has a marble-clad lobby under the old dome and retail shops in the gardens along the former rail concourse.

  • Where you’ll stay: Converted train cars that once whisked wealthy passengers across the country now make up some of the hotel’s accommodations. These train-car rooms come with Victorian-style furnishings. Spacious standard rooms, on the other hand, feature contemporary decor.
  • Eat well at onsite restaurants and bars, as well as a Victorian lounge flush with premium spirits and locally hand-crafted micro brews.
  • Explore Chattanooga aboard the complimentary electric shuttle just across from the lobby, which drops off guests near the Tennessee Aquarium and downtown shops and attractions.

Chattanooga, Tennessee: Museums and Parks Along the Riverfront

Set along the Tennessee-Georgia border, Chattanooga became a boomtown with the arrival of a major railroad in the late 19th century. The surrounding mountains and ridges made for a scenic backdrop for train passengers coming into the city. But they also proved problematic, trapping in industrial pollutants and creating what the Environmental Protection Agency declared to be the nation’s dirtiest air in 1969. Today, the city has scrubbed away its industrial-era grime and adopted greener practices: public parks, riverfront walkways, and a downtown electric shuttle, to name a few. Waterfront Coolidge Park is a popular downtown hangout where kids can hop on a century-old carousel and enjoy acres of open green space. During the summer, you can come here for concerts, festivals, and outdoor movie screenings.

Another point of interest is Chattanooga’s Walnut Street Bridge, one of the world’s longest pedestrian bridges. Its wrought-iron trusses stretch across the Tennessee River, which bisects the city’s downtown. From here, you can take a scenic stroll toward other downtown attractions, such as the Tennessee Aquarium and the Hunter Museum of American Art.

Picked by the New York Times as 1 of 45 Places to Go in 2012, Chattanooga has seen a resurgence of arts and culture in recent years. It now hosts a number of annual art and music festivals and features several up-and-coming art districts filled with independent boutiques and galleries. Head to the Bluff View Art District for some spectacular views—the historic neighborhood is set high atop stone cliffs overlooking the Tennessee River. In addition to galleries filled with works by nationally recognized artists, the district recognizes the culinary arts, with several restaurants and the city’s oldest artisan bakery.

Hotel Chalet stole my heart I originally booked a stay at Hotel Chalet because it is walking distance from a concert I was seeing at The Signal, but i had no idea i would fall in love with it the way that i did. I stayed in one of their train car rooms and it was so cozy! The bathroom is gorgeous and has heated floors, the towels were incredibly soft, the room was spotless, and the bed is by far the most comfortable bed i’ve ever slept in! John, the front desk manager, is incredibly sweet and was a great help during check out. The location is nice with walking distance to some great restaurants, stores, and art work (Grab some lunch from Nic & Norman’s the food is really good!) The only thing i would be mindful of when booking is the privacy. Anyone staying in the hotel or even walking by outside can see into the rail car rooms which can be a little awkward if you want some natural sunlight but other than that i was obsessed. 10/10 will be back!

Luxurious stay in a perfect downtown 'Nooga location Stayed here for two nights while visiting Chattanooga. The hotel's location simply can't be beat, it is within easy walking or driving distance of a great number of amazing sights, restaurants, bars, breweries, et c. The hotel itself was recently renovated and the room I stayed in – half of a former train car – was immaculate and felt very luxurious. While there's no traditional breakfast service the café in the lobby sells coffee and pastries. Parking was easy to find right outside the entrance. Every member of staff I interacted with was helpful and friendly. Next time I'm in Chattanooga, I'd love to stay here again. One slight downside of staying in one of the train cars is that windows on both sides are at ground level and so unless you keep the curtains closed every random passer-by, restaurant goer or other guests can see straight into your room. Still, keeping the curtains closed is no biggie.

Hope everyone else had better results To be fair we never made it due to a family emergency. Our experience started with the email the day before our visit which told us that parking was $18 a day. Not a major deal but would have been nice to know that at the time of booking. As I said we had to cancel and when I inquired about a refund for part (I didn't expect it all back) or even a voucher so that we could rebook sometime soon. I pretty much got hung up on. The people there could use some schooling on better attitudes and customer relations.
