Blowing Rock, North Carolina: Scenic Hikes and Skiing in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Blowing Rock sits on the edge of the 500,000-acre Pisgah National Forest in northeastern North Carolina. The town, named for a rock formation, is a home base for outdoor recreation in the Blue Ridge Mountains—especially hiking, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, and horseback riding. Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, a historic estate on 3,600 acres of forests and meadows, has 26 miles of carriage roads designated for walking and horseback riding. To see the sights from a car, head to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic motorway through the Appalachians.

Aside from the parkway, there’s plenty to do year-round here, from whitewater rafting and fly-fishing in the summer to cross-country and downhill skiing in the cooler months. About 25 miles northwest of Blowing Rock is Beech Mountain Resort, a popular ski spot with 17 trails for all skill levels. According to Fodor’s, it’s the highest ski area in the eastern United States, at 5,500 feet above sea level. Back in town, Blowing Rock’s Main Street is lined with antique shops, boutiques, and upscale bistros.

Gorgeous and well maintained resort. Would stay here again and love that they are pet friendly. $100 pet cleaning free was fair and I am good with them requiring pets be crated in your absence. (You can borrow a crate at no charge.) Multiple maintenance & grounds crews seen daily ( great job Will!) so kudos to the management. Location is an easy 1 mile walk into a gorgeous town. Thanks to Sherri at the front desk for her help. I would not stay in Dahlia 2 again. While nice, too many/daily maintenance issues-shelf falling off closet wall, screen slider that would not stay on track, glass panel falling out of front door (missed my toes fortunately), sagging mattress (thanks Tim for quick replacement), window cranks that barely worked & then broke.

Relaxing mini vacay We were looking for a spa resort to unwind after the death of our mother and the spa was fantastic. We had the works - massage, facial, mani-pedi. All of our techs were great. We were disappointed in the rooms for the money per night we were charged. Expected some upgrades for $300/night. Room was large with a nice little balcony. You could hear all the noise in the halls and next to our room. No linen/towel service daily - we had to call if we needed more towels they claim due to covid. But staff in the halls were complaining to guests about having to wear masks which I never saw her wear anyway. Tiny trash cans were overflowing by the time we left with to go boxes on the floor. Restaurant for dinner was really good - a little pricey for the quantity of food but service was good and the sea bass was excellent. Ordered lunch to go to the room and wasn't impressed. The largest to go drink was only 12 oz. Server told me that was the only size they offered. Asked for crackers or a piece of bread to eat with my salad and was told they didn't have that. You would think a kitchen in a large resort had a pack of crackers, piece of bread or a corn muffin to go with a large salad. Next visit to Blowing Rock we will stay at another hotel but definitely book the spa again.

Overpriced. Did not meet expectations. Condo floors were not vacuumed. Dead Palmetto bug greeted us in the living room on arrival. Bed and pillows uncomfortable. Light in kitchen not working. Had to search to find the wifi password. Was not informed when booked by phone that the condo would not have coffee. Only at check-in was a policy reminder offered explaining condo guests need to supply their own shampoo, hairdryer, coffee, etc. Charged $80 for housekeeping but told there would be no housekeeping because pandemic protocols are still in place. Condo guests are requested to take out the trash and do the dishes. It would have been nice to have been informed of this when the reservation was made. Other nicer options in Blowing Rock at this price point.
