Bait-and-Switch Hotel Chain Avoid this whole hotel chain! They will bait-and-switch you, charging you for a room at their premium location Magnificent Mile, cancelling your reservation without telling you, and re-booking you at their dusty sister hotel far away from Magnificent Mile (Ambassador Gold Coast). Then they’ll try to gaslight you by saying that YOU actually cancelled the reservation yourself and re-booked at their other location, which was a total lie. We planned our whole trip around being within walking distance of our activities at Magnificent Mile. Our trip cost us much more in Lyfts and time we can’t recover. They are dishonest, saying their oversell of the hotel is a "website issue" (even though this is a typical sales practice in hospitality). The management practices of these two establishments and the way they treat their customers is absolutely criminal! They also booked us at a government rate on their website, confirmed it at check-in, and then told us via their text “customer service” that “you weren’t supposed to be given that rate,” as if that’s our problem. If you don’t want to give a government rate, then don’t offer one. Their text "customer service" is just an argumentative employee who will make mediocre effort to make it right—stating “There’s nothing I can do.” I wish I could give them zero stars. They have no consideration for ruining your stay with their management problems and poor customer service. They ruined my family’s weekend, and it was the absolute worst experience I’ve ever had a hotel.

The bad outweigh the good. I booked far enough in advance through a 3rd party site (the norm these days). I thought the price might be too good to be true (~$200) per night. Did some further digging to find out we will be charged upon checking in a mandatory “package” that included vouchers for breakfast for 2 for each night and drink vouchers for each guest per night. This package ended up being about the same cost as our 2 night prepaid stay. Making the ACTUAL total per night $340. That is in line with most other similar hotels in the area. Pros: nice Gold Coast location a couple blocks from oak street beach, Michigan Ave, Division street farmers market. FANTASTIC British soul singer two nights we were there. Buffet food was decent and lots of variety. Cons: POOR customer service: I asked for them to come spray our windows that had all these spiders crawling on the inside (killed 6-7 in a 24 hour period) window or change our room. I was told by some young dude at the desk we will send someone up. No one ever came, room wasn’t changed, it’s nice to see my concern was a priority. The buffet desk attendant yelling “you have to wait!” because it is poorly executed with open seating and turning over the tables when folks are done. The rooftop terrace is supposed to be open at 8am, at 9:15am I go to the desk and ask is it located on the 17th floor, woman at the desk doesn’t know and young dude says yeah it should be open by now. Well, get up there and there are NO SIGNS TO INDICATE WHERE IS THE ROOFTOP TERRACE?! Finally a custodian appears from behind a door and I ask him, he tells me he is going to open it now. I ask isn’t it supposed to be open at 8am, he says he was busy doing other things. The terrace was ok if you overlook the wear and tear and dead bugs. They’ve taken the “vintage” thing a bit far….the room was huge and the bathroom could fit one person in it…barely! Also would be nice to get a shower curtain that is the right length to keep the water in the shower and not splashed on the floor. Carpet had lots of stains in the room. Do yourself a favor, stay at the Swissotel.

Customer service is not good Disappointed with our stay. We arrived at the hotel at 930am the morning of our reservation as we had read the reviews about reservations not being honored. We were told our rooms were there and to come back at 3pm to check in.. When we came back we were told only 1 of our room reservations was available. The lady was so very rude and said that the hotel was overbooked and they didn't have any more rooms. I literally had to insist that she give us our 2 rooms and eventually she said we could have the 2 rooms !!! On top of being charged the extra $125 for the VIP upgrade - we were also told had to pay a $125 deposit and were told it will take 7-10 days to receive this back (this was a per room charge) We had to pay extra for our drinks - the "free" tickets do not include what is stated ! A very expensive hotel stay and very stressful checking in.

Would not recommend excessive up charge Would not stay here again. Really nice hotel but got charged a lot of additional fees on check in. Got charged for two breakfasts per day and there only me staying at the hotel. Tried to use the drinks vouches I was charged for and was the. Told there’s an up charge for old fashioned. I did book through a theirs party but it wasn’t cheap. Spoke to other people and it appears they only charged certain people for the drinks vouchers and breakfast. Do not recommend and won’t be staying here again.

Hidden Mandatory Daily Fees at The Chicago Ambassador Gold Coast - I will not stay here again I had an extremely disappointing experience at The Chicago Hotel Collection Ambassador Gold Coast during a major convention weekend. After a 24-hour journey, I arrived to find that the hotel could not locate my reservation — despite the fact that it had been booked and paid in full through Expedia, with confirmation and receipt in hand. This hotel was previously Hyatt operated but not any more, and it shows! They used this as an excuse for the failure to find my reservation. To make matters worse, I was told that unless I paid an additional mandatory daily charge (totalling around US$650 for a 5-night stay) they would not honour my booking. Exhausted and with few options given the busy weekend, I was forced to pay this on the spot, and informed that the amount was non-refundable. I was not notified of this daily charge at the time of booking and no matter how much the hotel says it is clearly stated on their website, this business behaviour is completely unjustifiable. This strong-arm tactic is unacceptable and has left a very bad impression. The issues didn’t stop there. On one of the days my room was left completely unserviced. I had been out the entire day, and returned to find the room exactly as I had left it - no cleaning, no fresh towels, no attention whatsoever. Worryingly, even at check-in, cleanliness was an issue. The bathmat/floor towel was visibly dirty, which immediately raised concerns about hygiene and housekeeping standards. Even simple, common requests were handled poorly. I had forgotten my travel plug adaptor and asked at reception if they had any available to borrow. This is something most major hotels can easily accommodate. Not only did they have none, but the staff acted as though my request was an unreasonable inconvenience. For a hotel charging premium rates, plus excessive hidden fees, The Chicago Hotel Collection Ambassador Gold Coast delivers a shockingly poor guest experience. I won’t be returning, and I strongly advise others to read the fine print and review recent guest experiences before booking.
