Chicago's River North: World-Class Art Galleries, Restaurants, and Nightlife near Downtown

Bordering the Loop on the northern side of the Chicago River, the River North neighborhood is where the skyscrapers of downtown give way to the award-winning restaurants and trendy nightspots of the North Side. Once an industrial area, River North is today home to architectural gems—the Jenga-like Contemporaine residential building on Wells Street is a good example—as well as eateries to suit every appetite and budget.

In addition to a formidable culinary presence ranging from inventive Peruvian cuisine at Tanta Restaurant to Chicago classics such as Portillo's, River North boasts the country's largest concentration of art galleries outside of Manhattan. The River North Gallery District runs along Chicago, Superior, and Huron Streets, occupying century-old red-brick warehouses that have been converted into lofts and exhibition spaces. You can easily travel beyond River North using Chicago's public transportation system; check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for tips on navigating the city like a local.

This Hotel Stole Money From Me! DO NOT STAY HERE! In reading the other reviews, I'm going to take a different approach on this zero-stars review, and explain how they stole from me, rather than discuss the way in which they collect their ridiculous fees. Instead, I have asked 3 times for my benefits from the "benefits" amenity package, and I have not received a single response-nor any of those benefits. This is a firecracker of disappointment akin to a ritual of repeated torment in a place where joy once lived. Guided by its empathy-free crypt keeper amidst a hotel with no visible employees, I will highlight below how they took my money, provided nothing in return, and pretend to hide behind legalese instead of simply running a legitimate business. DO. NOT. STAY. HERE. As you see in other reviews there is a $49 daily amenities fee. However, some of the related benefits are not available if you booked through a third party site. There is a $25 processing fee per night. What in the actual F is that? It's 2025. I can send money to anyone, anywhere for free. What am I possibly getting for $50/2 days? Nothing. That's theft #1. In fact, imagine using a third party site who "processes" your transaction and then arriving for your actual booking and being charged for something that already exits. Hotels have one job--to book you in for the night and provide lodging. It's like using Priceline to book your SW flight and then arriving at the airport to be charged $25 to board the plane. Makes no sense. Theft #2. I have asked now repeatedly for the coupons and discounts listed on their Website. I never received these things. They took my money in promise of these benefits of which Rosie in the lobby pointed to the plexi-frame list of things and then shooed us off. I hope there is video footage of our transaction. In fact, I was not so upset about the fees, it was when I asked what I got for my money and she was rude and aggressive, that is what I was most upset with our check-in from hell. The exchange was so cringey I thought she was going to laugh and say, "JkJk." But she did not. It was awful. Theft #3. A rebate program that only is available to people who book directly. If I give you the fee at the property (which you do, regardless of where you booked), I want my benefit in return. Imagine giving $50 to your cousin to run down the street and pickup two $25 boxes of apples from your neighbor. But, since you sent the cousin the neighbor doesn't like, he will only give you one box of apples but keeps the $50. It's a scam. It's theft. And it's wrong, regardless of how much fine print is written everywhere. I want my 5% rebate via PayPal. Theft #4. Everyone knows the market price for water, unless you're at a rave, is not $50 for 6.Just stop it. Moreover, the hotel knows none of us can take 20+ of Pure Life water bottles home with us on an airplane. Scam! There are plenty of other things from our two night booking. From my booking the room for the night before because our plane arrived early on the second day, to the links not working in the SMS/text they sent and then blaming it on my AMEX not working (which they then ran at the property for all those amenity fees), to the guests complaining both in front of us and behind us and we were shooed away. I was promised housekeeping would know where my key was upon our early arrival, yet in both Spanish and English, they knew nothing of this arrangement, so we had to wait until Rosie arrived at 10. Our plane landed around 8am. I dare the management marketing person to respond here to these indefensible grifts instead of responding to my actual Emails. Just don't. I see how you patronized the other reviewers for not seeing fees or reading about housekeeping coming every three days. I have your Website up. I see how you describe the amenities package. The $25 fee is elsewhere on a different page. Why? You know people use Amex and Priceline to book these things as you have to agree to it; yet, you know their standard forms make it harder to share all your sneaky fine print and derelict promise of benefits. No one wants to go eat elsewhere off-property with a $10 coupon. What is this? A missed flight in the Delta terminal or a hotel in the city charging hundreds a dollars a night? It's tacky, but twice as bad as airlines charging for water and air. Compelling people to go elsewhere incents them not to go at all, but you know that. If you were a real business you'd simply sell the actual food with a nice upcharge for the service, and call it a day. Sigh, the same would be true for the hotel itself. Instead of two extra fees per day, the hold, the rate itself, etc., you could simply just charge more per night and offer a good product. But you don't offer a good product. You offer a trip through a haunted forest where guests are on their own without service before or after hours. Phones that ring nowhere (I'm not kidding), and an Email business card for management who does not respond and does not care. I wouldn't be surprised if one day all of the upset guests find each other, grab a few cases of beer, lock Rosie out, and squat, creating their own business. Hiding behind the Windy City laws they will turn the place into and Animal Farm passing a bottle of Pure Life around as the gavel-conch allowing people to vent about how City Hotels Collection STOLE THEIR MONEY just as it stole Dr. Chris Gurrie's money the time before them. The will take all the cheap athletic art off the walls and create a shared bonfire in the lobby to heat the place during those cold Chicago springs when your HVAC isn't working. Finally, they just might venture downstairs to see where you're hiding the real owners who went into the hotel business, and free them to live the lives they once dreamed--offering a good product to good people while offering them a nice stay. But until then, enjoy your zero stars and the $150 you stole from me. I hope you buy an actual pair of Jordans.

Unexpected charges after checkout and confusing folio Stayed here this summer and the billing was a mess. I was hit with unexpected repeat charges for the same stay, and the “Guest Folio” at checkout listed extra line items/taxes that didn’t match my booking. The charges continued after I left, and I had to get my credit card company involved to reverse them. Staff offered little help or explanation. Room was just OK, housekeeping inconsistent, and hallway/train noise made sleep rough. Location is convenient, but the time and hassle of fixing the bill erased any upside. Tip for travelers: Get an itemized folio in writing, photograph it, and monitor your card for a week after checkout. Until the billing is transparent and staff can clearly explain charges, I’d book elsewhere.

Rose was horrible We stayed at this hotel for 8 nights and the only downside was a worker at the front desk named rose who didn't even give us a full name after harassing us multiple times and making countless mistakes which caused us to even get fined for late check out because of her not informing us
