Kennedy’s gravesite.

Arlington, VA: Timeless National Landmarks Along the Potomac River

Located just over the Potomac River from Washington, DC, the area of present-day Arlington was originally surveyed to be part of the national capital. The land was given back to Virginia in the 1840s, but you’ll still find several attractions here that are nationally associated with Washington, DC. Arlington is the home of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defense, which conducts one-hour tours by appointment. Along the Potomac lies Arlington National Cemetery, where you can see the eternal flame flickering at John F. Kennedy's gravesite and watch soldiers switch shifts during the Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The cemetery also contains Arlington House, also known as The Robert E. Lee Memorial, where the Confederate general kept residency from 1857 to 1861.

For an easy day trip, take the scenic half-hour drive south to Alexandria and Mount Vernon, George Washington's former home. Tours of the sprawling estate give a feel for colonial life—the estate has a working gristmill and blacksmith shop, and the mansion features many of the original 18th-century objects used by the Washington family. Even the upper gardens at Mount Vernon have been tailored to appear as they would have in 1799.
