Orlando, Florida: World-Famous Theme Parks and Cultural Surprises

Located in the center of Florida, Orlando may be forever associated with the Walt Disney World® Theme Parks—the world’s most-visited entertainment resort. Spanning roughly 30,000 acres, it encompasses four theme parks, two water parks, and five golf courses. There’s no shortage of things to do here: begin your day by boarding a rocket-shaped three-seater that climbs to 180 feet before entering a deep black tunnel and racing past stars, satellites, and constellations. Walk across the park to sample Moroccan cuisine for lunch, or ride a dune buggy through a haunted mansion. Before heading back to the hotel, take in the nightly fireworks, laser, and water show. One of the most popular family destinations in the world, sunny Orlando is also home to Universal Orlando—which includes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter—SeaWorld, and Gatorland.

Those hoping to shake up the typical theme-park-dominated itinerary can head into downtown Orlando's vibrant arts district. The neighborhood boasts venues such as CityArts Factory, a multifaceted patchwork of gallery spaces, and SAK Comedy Lab, which hosts family-friendly improv shows five nights a week.

Staff are great but quite literally everything else is a nightmare. The only positive about this hotel is the staff, they were excellent throughout our stay, always helpful and friendly. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end. At first glance, the hotel gives off a quirky, modern motel vibe with a stylish reception area and plenty of amenities on site. However, the rooms tell a very different story. We stayed in two separate rooms and neither had a fully functioning door lock. Both had broken fixtures, including hairdryers and televisions, with tired, outdated décor and worn furniture. It feels like the reception has been recently refurbished, but the rooms themselves seem untouched since the 90s. While the on-site Starbucks, shop, and self-serve options might seem convenient, the prices are outrageous. I paid $18 for a travel-sized shampoo and conditioner at Gator Grabs – frankly, a rip-off. Noise is another major issue. The pool area runs loud parties until 10pm most nights, with crowds of children and adults alike keeping the place noisy well into the night. When the pool shuts the party moves to the grass area and continues till early morning. The room walls are paper-thin, so forget about getting an early night. We eventually had to change rooms because of how disruptive our neighbours were. Without a TMI we heard "everything" id be even more disgusted if I had travelled with young children and they were trying to sleep through this absolute nightmare, thank god we didn't!! Ultimately we fell for the travel agent’s pitch that this was a “nice” hotel, but in reality, it’s far from it. While it isn’t the very worst option on International Drive, it’s nowhere near the restful base you’d want for busy park days. If you’re travelling for the theme parks, I’d strongly recommend staying on-site at Disney or at a better-reviewed hotel. The money you think you’ll save here will be swallowed up by Uber fares and other transport costs, as the only shuttle service provided is to Universal. In short: great staff, but everything else is well below par. Spend a little more elsewhere and save yourself the disappointment.

Mouldy rooms. Unfortunately my stay wasn’t the best, after a few days my room started to grow mould, and already having asthma made me quite unwell with a minor throat infection. And had to attend a pharmacy costing me $150 - id told the hotel, and they did move me rooms, but getting a resolution is still ongoing, they told me they would reimburse me for my medical bills and still waiting for that, They have said that the would refund me 4 nights of my stay but still hasn’t been a great trip being unwell. The house keeping was mediocre. Didn’t clean out the sinks or sweep the floor. So had to end up asking for a vacuum cleaner to do it myself. Advertised you get a 55” tv in the room but mine was more like a 32”. Broken and dangerous plugs also on show. This was to celebrate my 30th birthday and unfortunately this experience fell short.
