Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is renowned for its sun-kissed beaches and breathtaking natural landscapes. Beyond its stunning coastline, the region boasts remarkable inland wonders, including Damajagua—a series of 27 cascading waterfalls carved into limestone. Guided tours take visitors through this natural playground, offering opportunities to swim and slide down smooth rock formations.

For a panoramic view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea, take a ride on the teleférico (cable car), which ascends 2,565 feet to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres. At the top, you'll discover lush botanical gardens and a striking replica of Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. A scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela reveals the remnants of an early colonial settlement, including the ruins of one of the first churches in the Americas.

I truly enjoyed my stay in cofresi. The staff are very professional and friendly and very attentive to our needs, Glenis and Rigoberto are really good. Lifestyles are doing very much needed renovation and repairs to each of the resorts. The restaurants are not always available, which is disappointing. However, the food is very good at the ones that are available.

Scam Artist and Money hungry On 05/09/ 2025 I took my Wife , My In-Laws and my Children here for my wife’s birthday. We spent our first 2 hours in the lobby arguing with the front desk clerk, supervising and manager, because they removed my kids name from my reservation and wanted to charge me $103 a night for them to stay there . I order 2 rooms with 2 beds and asked them why would I order 2 bedrooms and 2 beds if I wasn’t planning on bringing my children. They told me it was a glitch in the system and they were sorry but I still had to pay. I asked them could I pay $206 and they let the other $206 go since i obviously couldn’t leave a 8 year old and an 11 home alone for 4 days with no adults . They told me I had to pay or my kids had to leave . I asked to speak to the manager and she basically told me the same thing the clerk did ( each time I asked for someone hire they said they were at lunch and made wait) the Manager called her manager when after she talked to me . He refused to talk with me and gave me a generic email address that I emailed and never received a response from him. On 5/16/2025 I received a call from the hotel saying it was a glitch in their system and they only charged me for half of the $412 and could I pay them the other half. I explained to them the same way they explained to me about how glitches sometimes happen and it’s no fault of mine or the hotel things just happen sometimes. She begin to ask me could I just do her this favor and pay it and I asked her who did me a favor when my kids were left off my reservation? I asked her how she think I felt when they told me I could pay for my kids or they had to leave. I told them That I was appalled that they would call me in America 7 days later about $206 for an 8 year old and a 11 year old. I also informed her that the girl who cleaned our room stole my brand new apple AirPods. She had no interest in discussing my missing AirPods and continued to focus on the $206 for my children. Now loss in all of this is my children were already paid for when I made reservations. They’re calling me 7 days later in another country so I can pay for my children a second time . I don’t get how it was impossible for you to and my 8 and 11 year old children on yo my reservation but you guys can work so hard to chase a second payment for them down! The food has flies on them . I sent bartenders come out of the bathroom zipping their pants up and going back to their stations without washing their hands . The bathrooms in the lobby and throughout the resort were disgusting . The lines are always extremely long in the lobby . I seen a couple throw their registrations papers at them and then they refused to let the man and his family leave resort and told them we got your money whether you stay here or not . A couple hours later a customer got into a fight with one of the staff . This place has potential but they’re so money hungry and petty they will never be on par with the other resorts my family and i usually stay on in the Dominican Republic!

Worst place in Dominican Republic after 8 visits. It’s been only one night so far, but this is the worst resort I have stayed at my life. And I am an avid traveler. I’m not very picky. For my hotel rooms, I want safe, clean and what I was promised when staying at a hotel/airbnd/resort. I’m hoping that I can talk to a manager tomorrow to make things better. I have spoken to three people and no results. I was told I could go and take a shower at the spa since I spent money on a massage but that’s not very convenient to go all the way to the spa to take a shower and then come back to the dirty/musty room, so hopefully they will fix it. I Can’t sleep worried about someone breaking in the room. moldy nasty refrigerator l, ant infestation, clogged up sink, clogged up tub, and a soap dish that could fall at any time in the tub. I did freshen up on my Spanish before coming here, which was a last minute trip but majority of the staff do not understand or speak English very well, which is fine but when I need something I can’t get the answers to. Someone help me! I have 3 more nights here!!! I want to switch rooms and be able to visit the Azul restaurant.
