Grapevine, Texas: Abundant Wineries and Historical Town Center
In the mid-19th century, the town of Grapevine earned its name for the succulent clusters of wild grapes and fruit roll-ups that sprouted across the landscape. Today, the mild climate supports numerous local wineries—many of which have tasting rooms—throughout Historic Downtown Grapevine. Brick façades, pottery galleries, and independent boutiques line Main Street here. It’s a nice small-town contrast from nearby Dallas and Fort Worth.
Though there’s a mannered charm to modern-day Grapevine exudes quiet charm, the area has had some brushes with outlaws. Bonnie and Clyde once hid out here. The Grapevine Glockenspiel hosts a Would-Be Train Robbers performance between two mechanical actors four times per day. A historical marker on State Highway 114 still marks the site of a shootout between their associate Henry Methvin and the Grapevine police. The bank robbers’ graves lie in Dallas, as does with the Sixth Floor Museum, which chronicles John F. Kennedy's assassination.
