Augusta, Georgia: Historic Riverfront Town & Home of the Masters Tournament
Augusta has been synonymous with The Masters ever since the Augusta National Golf Club began hosting the annual major tournament in 1934. While it’s considered perhaps America’s preeminent golf course, the Golf Club is only open to the public during Masters week. Thankfully for those not visiting during the tournament, Augusta offers plenty of other things to do. Start with a walk through its National Downtown Historic District. With architectural styles ranging from federal to Greek revival to Italianate, the neighborhood includes buildings dating back to 1783, as well as the boyhood home of President Woodrow Wilson—a handsome manse built in 1859.
Augusta enjoys a peaceful riverfront location along the Savannah River. Take advantage of the charming setting with a stroll down the Riverwalk, where you can meditate with nature with a stop at its Japanese gardens. The Riverwalk also often hosts Sunday night jazz during the summer and an open-air farmers market on Saturdays.
