Hotel at a Glance: The Congress Plaza Hotel & Convention Center

When it was opened in 1893, The Congress Plaza Hotel & Convention Center was intended to be the elite spot for travelers who passed through Chicago. The hotel first welcomed guests during the World’s Columbian Exposition. Over the next 50 years, it was furnished with glamorous ballrooms and stylish supper clubs. Now the hotel’s chief advantage is its superb location in downtown Chicago, where it stands along Michigan Avenue. It’s just minutes from Grant Park, several world-class museums, and a host of luxury retail stores.

  • Onsite dining: Rafael's Restaurant serves gourmet burgers, pan-roasted rainbow trout, and other specialties. In the morning, you can enjoy a hearty American breakfast at the Gazebo Restaurant.
  • Past presidential guests: Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Richard Nixon
  • Work up a sweat in the 24-hour fitness room.
  • Get some culture across the street at the Auditorium Theatre, which offers musical performances, plays, and ballet.

Chicago's Loop: Historic Commercial Center with World-Class Museums and Parks

Named after the shape formed by the elevated train tracks that form its perimeter, The Loop is Chicago's downtown and the country’s second-largest business district. Skyscrapers such as the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the art-deco Chicago Board of Trade Building loom large here. They overlook waterfront parks, a glitzy theater district, and some of the world’s finest art collections.

The Art Institute of Chicago's gargantuan collection covers everything from marble busts to Grant Wood's American Gothic. Just north of the Art Institute, Millennium Park is known for both the Frank Gehry–designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion and for the sculpture Cloud Gate, known to Chicagoans as “The Bean” for its legume-like shape. Nearby Grant Park is dotted with several impressive attractions, including Buckingham Fountain, the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium. The city's public transportation system is among the country's best. Check out our guide to Chicago public transportation for helpful tips on navigating the city like a local

The proximity to everything on Michigan Ave. Though valet was not available, Jose gave me several choices which was extremely helpful.

Pass this hotel for sure Other than location and price, would not recommend to stay here, check in process , the staff was not friendly, almost a bother to them. Was not given a room facing the lake as requested. The hotel is old which is fine, but the sink and tub did not drain. No heat available till November . Requested a space heater and had to call 3 times before I received it.

Less Than Impressed The last week of September my wife and I began a 3 week vacation that took us around Lake Superior and involved 15 lodging locations. Of these the Congress Plaza was one of the ones I most looked forward to and was easily the most disappointing. It began the moment I approached the counter to check in. The two clerks were in the process of criticizing the previous guest. Not a great first impression. Then, as one approached to assist me she finished her end of the conversation by dropping an F-bomb. Amazingly she showed no awareness of this. Next we went to our room and found that, instead of the queen room that we had reserved we had been given one with 2 double beds. After a long day of driving it was a battle I chose not to fight. My wife and I can still sleep comfortably in a double. Still a reservation means just that--a certain type of room is reserved for my use and I expect it to be available. And finally when we returned to our room at the end of the first of our two day stay our passkey didn't work. Meaning a trip to the front desk, where I was told I only had a one night reservation. Originally that was correct but I modified the reservation later to two nights. The clerk offered to extend us another night--for an additional $50. Fortunately I had the documentation in my room. To her credit she corrected the information promptly and cheerfully. Still, an unnecessary, and stressful, inconvenience. To end on a positive note I can't say enough about the driveway staff. They were, without exception, friendly and helpful. One saved me a bit of money on parking and another had a great breakfast recommendation. Another ( I believe his name was Omar) made a call on our behalf to a tour company to ask them to wait a few minutes because we were running late.

Great stay I have to compliment the property and the staff. They were friendly, starting with their willingness to accept shipments. Perfectly clean, room with a view. Close to downtown, in the heart of Chicago. I'll be back.
