Knoxville, Tennessee: Urban Wilderness amid the Great Smoky Mountains

Knoxville, the third-largest city in Tennessee, lies along the banks of the Tennessee River in the eastern part of the state. Shaped by the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and the fertile lowlands of the Tennessee Valley, the city is known for having plenty of outdoor recreation all year long. Paddleboarding and canoeing along the Tennessee River are popular warm-weather activities. In the winter, you can snowshoe and cross-country ski along the 7-mile Clingmans Dome Road (closed to vehicular traffic from December 1 to March 31) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Visitors can hike, bike, and jog all year long in the 1,000-acre Knoxville Urban Wilderness or along greenways that crisscross downtown Knoxville.

The heart and soul of downtown Knoxville might be Market Square. Lined with upscale restaurants, boutiques, and pubs, it hosts live musical performances and festivals all year. It's also the site of a farmers' market every Wednesday and Saturday through November, and then a holiday market every Saturday through December.

On the southeast corner of Market Square, the Museum of East Tennessee History is well worth a visit. The museum is run by the East Tennessee Historical Society, which offers lectures, tours, and exhibits about the area's history. From here, it's easy to swing by other downtown attractions, including the Knoxville Museum of Art and World's Fair Park, the site of the 1982 World's Fair.
