Manhattan’s Upper East Side: Star-Studded Neighborhood Close to Central Park and Museums

Celebrities, politicians, and some of New York’s wealthiest denizens make their homes in the Upper East Side, which ranks among the most affluent neighborhoods in Manhattan (property values here have the highest pricing per square foot in the United States). Located just minutes from Central Park and the Theater District, the picturesque neighborhood has served as the backdrop for a litany of films and television shows, from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Woody Allen’s Manhattan.

The western edge of the Upper East Side abuts Central Park and the “Museum Mile,” a stretch of cultural institutions on Fifth Avenue anchored by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the largest art galleries in the world. With more than 2 million works on display, you’ll have to spend your time there wisely—check out Time Out New York’s list of “10 Must-See Works” for a handy reference. Nine other museums fill out the Museum Mile, most notably the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Guggenheim art museum and The Africa Center, the first addition to Museum Mile since 1959.

Very clean, excellent service at front desk. Within walking distance of 96th St. Subway station. Used the gym and steam room on the lower level, will be staying here again when we visit.

Neighborhood Feel It’s situated just off 1st with a market on the corner and views of the East River. Bring a water bottle to fill because there is none in the room. If you enjoy more than a cup of coffee in the morning, pack some pods because the line in the lobby for the machine is tedious. Neighborhood is totally walkable.

Frustratingly inconsistent Many aspects of my stay were more than satisfactory -- I would especially like to call out Edson for an efficient and friendly check-in experience, and the front desk person who helped me extend my stay when that became necessary (I'm sorry that I didn't catch her name). She explained that I could come back later for the additional Platinum F&B vouchers for my additional days. Unfortunately, when I came to the desk yesterday to do so, the man at the desk at the time told me that I would not get any additional vouchers; that the other front desk personnel had "done me a solid" that they shouldn't have. I'd like to suggest that you provide additional training to your front desk staff regarding Marriott's Elite Benefits. Upon reading the fine print, it seems that I should have actually received 2 vouchers per day, as there are two guests in my room and the benefit guarantee is for the primary guest plus 1. I realize that these are small amounts relative to the total cost of stay, but the inconsistent experience led to my frustration during a very difficult period. Other inconsistencies: housekeeping. One housekeeper was amazing, restocking with extra coffee and cups/glasses. Others, however, neglected to replace coffee and left me with no cups. I wrote to the general manager sharing my feedback; he did not reply.

Beware...Hotel is Scamming people for fraudulent "smoking fees"!! I am disgusted at the lack of customer service and treatment of Marriott Bonvoy members at this location. I have stayed at this specific property about 6 times this year, as my son lives literally around the block. The day after my most recent four night stay, I received an additional $250 plus tax charge on my Marriott Amex card for a "smoking fee". I have asthma, and have never smoked a day in my life. Neither has my 80 year old mother who was with me! Neither of us vape or bring candles to hotels. I immediately called the hotel manager and was told they use a 3rd party device to detect cigarette smoke..."and it's never wrong!" (It obviously IS). Explaining this to the manager got me no where. So, I disputed the charge on my credit card. The hotel told the credit card it was a legitimate charge, so they denied my dispute. I reached out to Marriott Bonvoy (as I'm a Platinum member - not that it should matter)...and I was told I would hear back from the hotel within 5 business days. It's now been 7+ business days, and I've heard nothing! My son even went back into the hotel with my bill, and the manager basically told him to "pound salt". I have since looked into these "3rd party devices" - and have learned this is a phenomenon going on around the country at many hotel chains with people finding $250-$500 charges on their credit cards for "smoking fees" - when they don't smoke at all. I've also learned that apparently things like hair dryers, humidity from showers, smells from hallways, etc. can trigger these systems. One of the companies even sells these to hotels and bills them as "income generators". News stations in Boston have done stories and a travel reporter had the same experience with another hotel chain and they wouldn't reverse his charge until his story went viral! (I also learned that many Marriott Courtyards are franchises - including this one!) Needless to say - I will NEVER stay in this hotel again...and I will insist on a "final walkthrough" of my room before leaving any hotel in the future. Beware....I see a class action lawsuit coming in the near future!!!
