Waterloo, Ontario: Three Cities in Canada’s Technology Triangle

You might call the Waterloo region—which encompasses the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge—some “intellectual property.” Here, you’ll find two major research universities, the University of Waterloo and Wilfried Laurier University, as well as Conestoga College. These institutions lend the area the vibe of both high-minded academia and upbeat college town. Beyond the flocks of students and professors, though, the Waterloo area also forms the rough points of Canada’s technology triangle, where hundreds of tech firms, as well as big-name companies like BlackBerry, maintain a strong presence.

Despite its booming business and education sectors, Waterloo maintains plenty of small-town charm thanks in large part to its ample green spaces and trails. One favorite trail is the 45-kilometer Kissing Bridge Trailway, which passes through the last covered bridge still standing in Ontario. Known colloquially as the Kissing Bridge, the rustic red structure offers a scenic place to snap a photo or steal a smooch.

Good for our short stay We were staying here for a friend's wedding in St Jacobs. Bed was decent, room was clean and a little bigger than I expected. Location was great for walking from to and from the St Jacobs market. Bonus, they left a Purell/cleaning wipe for us which was great because I am a germophobe!

Great Staff and Service at the Marriot Courtyard St Jacobs Older property. One slow old elevator... But that's it for the negatives. Staff here are beyond friendly, cordial and helpful. From the front desk staff to housekeeping and the Bistro, this Marriott property corners the market on customer service. All hotels should be run like the Marriot Courtyard St Jacobs. Kudos to everyone I interacted with and thank you for a wonderful stay!

Great hotel but very noisy The hotel is very comfortable and modern. The staff from the front desk to the housekeepers and restaurant staff are all very kind and courteous in every manner. The rooms are spotlessly clean, well appointed and the beds are comfortable. The downside to the hotel, and what I feel is letting it down, is the noise coming from the water pipes. We were kept up late into the nights and woken up at 5 am every morning with the noise, and it is loud. The front desk changed our room from 218 to 213, but it made no difference. We also had somebody in the room above walking very heavily periodically until 2 am every night, and again in the early hours of the morning. The person was stomping and it disrupted and disturbed our sleep. We also encountered one night, a very noisy party of people in the hallway, opposite us who took to horse play, shouting and running up and down immediately outside our room keeping us up. We did not get much sleep, and at one point, we were looking into moving hotels. But as we had already already packed up and moved rooms once, we were too tired to do so again as we had only two more nights left. If you are sensitive to noise, then I do not reccomend staying here.
