Orlando, Florida: World-Famous Theme Parks and Cultural Surprises

Located in the center of Florida, Orlando may be forever associated with the Walt Disney World® Theme Parks—the world’s most-visited entertainment resort. Spanning roughly 30,000 acres, it encompasses four theme parks, two water parks, five golf courses, and the Disney Springs® Area. There’s no shortage of things to do here: begin your day by boarding a rocket-shaped three-seater that climbs to 180 feet before entering a deep black tunnel and racing past stars, satellites, and constellations. Walk across the park to sample Moroccan cuisine for lunch, or ride a dune buggy through a haunted mansion. Before heading back to the hotel, take in the nightly fireworks, laser, and water show. One of the most popular family destinations in the world, sunny Orlando is also home to Universal Orlando—which includes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter—SeaWorld, and Gatorland.

Those hoping to shake up the typical theme-park-dominated itinerary can head into downtown Orlando's vibrant arts district. The neighborhood boasts venues such as CityArts Factory, a multifaceted patchwork of gallery spaces, and SAK Comedy Lab, which hosts family-friendly improv shows five nights a week.

Be aware. Extra charges at checkout without explanation. In terms of our stay for 14 nights from 2nd-16th April, we can’t really fault the hotel as it provided an excellent base for Disney World at a very reasonable price plus we had the benefit of the shuttle bus service to the park. However, the experience since we checked out is an absolute disgrace. Upon our return, my credit card was charged twice in the region of $1300 and $210 with no explanation. After an exhaustive online search trying to find a direct email address for the hotel without success, I had no other option but to phone the hotel from the UK, costing me in the region of £30, to finally be told that the $1300 charge was an error on the hotels behalf and that I would be refunded. The member of staff that I spoke with could not initially explain the $210 charge, but after exchanging emails directly with her, she finally sent me an invoice detailing the daily resort fees (plus tax) and a charge for using the restaurant which we did not use apart from breakfast which was included in our stay. The hotel initially had no record of the inclusion of breakfast in our stay, but after showing them proof in our booking it was later confirmed and added. I suspect the charge was for one days breakfast that was not removed from our stay, but after numerous emails to the member of staff I previously spoke with I still do not have a explanation for the charge and it is yet to be refunded to me. This on top of losing around £15 in exchange rate differences when I was refunded for $1300, plus the cost of phone calls to the hotel due to errors on their behalf has cost me in the region of £75, which I find unacceptable. I travel regularly for work and it is common courtesy and I thought standard hotel industry practice to advise guests of any additional charges during their stay at the point of checkout so it can be settled or disputed there and then. This was not the case here, and if it had been I would not be in this position now. The hotel needs to train its staff to ensure all guests are presented with an invoice and advised of any additional charges at the point of checkout, especially when there is a resort fee that they may not be aware of, and not just charge personal credit cards without any prior warning. I will continue to contact the hotel employee I spoke with by email and Marriott HQ customer service until I feel that a suitable resolution has been agreed. For anyone considering staying here, please make sure you check with reception at checkout whether you will be charged for any extras. It seems that they feel there is no need for this which I find totally unacceptable for a hotel chain as large as Marriott.

A nice family friendly hotel We had a great stay here in April. We were visiting Orlando to visit Disney and the hotel was ideally located. We stayed for 8 nights. The hotel has a nice drive up to it which is landscaped and besides a lake so initial impressions were good. We were then given our room and we found this ok. The room had two queens, a massive tv and separate toilet/shower area and then sink area. We had a view overlooking the pool area. The room was fairly quiet however you could hear people in corridors at night. Everything was fairly clean. There was a resort fee which the hotel then gave some back through voucher to use at the bar or the Starbucks here. Outside there was a nice area for children to play with some corn hole, jenga and football. The pool seemed cold and a bit dirty at times. I sat in the edge at one point and could see something in the bottom. Maids were always around and we never had any issues with room cleanliness and she always left fresh towels. There was a little store in the hotel selling snacks if you needed something on site. The location was fairly good with access to Starbucks, 7/11 nearby and also Chili’s. If you had stayed for maybe longer than a week you might have started to struggle round about for places to eat unless you started going back to places you had been. On our last evening we did have the unfortunate event of a family next door and they were very loud everything could be heard through the walls. Kids crying and shouting. We moved on with our stay but considering this hotel is 3 star we thought it did its job well and it was family friendly. Upon leaving the hotel we did find they had charged us for parking which we did not have so we queried this. It was rectified but detracted from our stay a little as we were on holiday having to sort this issue out.
