Hotel at a Glance: Craignair Inn and Restaurant

From its elevated ledge overlooking the ocean, the Craignair Inn invites guests to simply sit and watch the tide roll in. It’s a sensational view—Fodor’s says, “it’s tough to find a better waterfront location than at the Craignair.” The inn complements the beauty outside with individually decorated guest rooms inside, each as pretty as the next.

  • Start the day with the inn’s gourmet breakfast, which may include fresh-baked muffins, egg-and-vegetable scrambles, or crepes smothered with a berry compote. It’s all served in a dining room with a view of the water.
  • Sit a spell on the porch, on the wooden swing, or on the Adirondack chairs on the lawn. Each inviting perch looks out on the ocean.
  • Dine onsite: The inn offers dinner at its onsite restaurant on weekends between Labor Day and Columbus Day. Seafood is a staple, including Maine lobster.
  • In the press: Yankee magazine named it Maine’s best seaside country inn in 2012, calling it an “unpretentious inn with an enviable location.”
  • Nearby town: Rockland, the “lobster capital of the world,” is just 15 minutes away by car. Just head north up Maine’s beautiful coast.

Midcoast Maine: Picturesque Harbors and World-Famous Lobster

Midcoast Maine is a stretch of coastline known for its abundance of charming downtowns, postcard-worthy harbors, and lively seafaring culture. If you’re coming from the south, the gateway to the region is Brunswick, a culturally rich destination anchored by the presence of Bowdoin College, whose alumni include Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Travel up the coast from Brunswick and you’ll hit St. George and Rockland, where you’ll find the Farnsworth Art Museum. The museum is dedicated to American art; among its most treasured holdings are paintings by N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth. Rockland’s harbor is often dotted with handsome windjammer sailboats, making this a convenient spot to begin a coastal cruise.

A little further up the coast is the charming town of Camden, where historical buildings abound. Frommer’s calls it “a quintessential Maine coastal town” and that “no Hollywood movie set could improve on” its harbor. You can dine at European-style bistros and pick up souvenirs in boutiques set in 19th-century brownstone buildings. Along the waterfront, colorful wooden buildings house restaurants that serve fresh-caught Maine lobster and rock crab.

Prepare your back for a terrible night sleep The Inn was taken over in 2019 so improvements are coming but the bed was one of the most uncomfortable. Not sure why an Inn doesn’t have fresh and clean bedding. Do they think it’s quaint?? And we were instructed to take “short showers” because they are on well water. The shower was so restricted that it took a long time to rinse the soap off. No way I could take a short shower…. If you are looking at a basic and not so comfortable stay in the area, this inn will suffice. Breakfast was nice. Go with the blueberry whole wheat pancakes. Don’t miss McLoons for a lobster roll. It’s only 5 miles away and one of the best in the state of Maine. I would skip the overly salted meal at the Inn and get the lobster roll at McLoons!! MUCH better and healthier.

Peaceful Getaway with DELICIOUS Food and Beverages What an incredibly peaceful visit to coastal Maine. The views were breathtaking. The food and drinks were mouthwatering—we were never disappointed and never wanted to try any other restaurant because it was So Good for Every Single Meal. The owners and staff were so friendly, accommodating, and had such attention to detail. Soft linens, great mattress, clean and tidy rooms, lovely scents and environment at the Inn. It was just what we needed. Will. Be. Back!!!!!!

A wonderful Mother Daughter weekend! Just returned from a mother and daughter weekend to celebrate the coming of spring at the Craignair Inn, and could not wait a day to send a thank you shout out to owners Lauren and Greg for their gracious hospitality, individual service, and excellent dining experiences. Nestled at the entrance to the Clark Island Nature Preserve, this gem of a traditional Down East Inn has been revised, restored, refreshed with a lovely color palate and updated to suit all COVID standards. The main dining area (and large new dining deck currently in progress) offers stellar water views and local art. Rooms are cozy with each having its own personality. Between my daughter and I, we have traveled most of the world and found the dining experience at the Craignair Inn to be comparable to many of our favorite family owned inns specializing in locally sourced foods. Just wait until you try those fresh out of the cove oysters and seafoods. We ordered four different excellent appetizers, main courses, and desserts over the weekend and have plans to return to experience the rest of their menu. Ask Gregg for wine pairings; he won’t steer you wrong. Gregg also surprised us with his stock of rare specialty whiskeys, a lovely way to end an evening. Mother’s Day is this weekend and Father's day is coming, so do yourself a favor and bring yourfolks for a wonderful stay. They will surely be delighted!
