Laguna Beach, California: Seaside Art Community with Cliffside Mansions and Tide Pools

Laguna Beach is located about an hour south of Los Angeles, just off the iconic Pacific Coast Highway. Fringed by picturesque bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this gorgeous resort city is widely known as an affluent seaside community, thanks in part to the MTV reality show Laguna Beach. The Orange County city has its fair share of elaborate mansions, high-end boutiques, and upscale restaurants, but what sets Laguna Beach apart is its artistic scene.

In typical Southern California fashion, visitors are drawn to the shores of the city’s Main Beach, where they spend days lounging by the ocean and playing volleyball along the boardwalk. Toward the beach’s north end lies Bird Rock, a towering rock formation where seabirds often gather. When the tide ebbs, you can spot sea slugs, octopi, red urchins, and sea cucumbers swimming in the tide pools around the rock.

Dating back to the 1920s, the city’s artistic community is set mainly in the Laguna Village neighborhood. Here, you can see public artwork, watch artisans working in their studios, and browse art galleries. Fingerhut Gallery has an impressive collection that includes paintings by Picasso and quirky sculptures made by Dr. Seuss. The Laguna Art Museum collects California art dating back to the mid-19th century, from pastoral paintings of the Sierra Nevada to modern abstract art. For an introduction to the scene, drop by the First Thursdays Art Walk, which takes place along the Pacific Coast Highway on the first Thursday of each month.

Quieter end of Laguna Beach On the quieter end of Laguna Beach with fairly easy access to beautiful Crescent Beach, but do know that it is all downhill to the beach, sooo all uphill back. The rooms are comfortable, most parking is covered parking, it was quiet at night and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Affordable for those who want to save money This is a family run property, and they do their very best to accommodate you. The condition of the hotel is probably 2-2.5 stars. It was our most affordable option for what we needed. Some things to be aware of: the wifi is terrible; in fact, we used our personal hotspot the whole time as the wifi basically didn’t work. Leaving the hotel by car onto the Coast Highway, your front underside of the car will scrape the payment. Happens to all cars. The ice machine is locked from 9 pm to 9 am. The television has limited channels. I wanted to watch the Scottish Open (major golf event) and it was not available. Parking seemed plentiful, but it’s tricky, especially for larger vehicles. All in all, we would stay there again.

Great experience Our family owned a beach house from the early 60s So when one of our brothers passed away we wanted the memorial to be at Crescent Bay where our house was 4 different family members stayed there From the start to the finish every was perfect We got the last row of units as I wanted to glance at the ocean Sal was so helpful Nothing was too much for him Water was provided which was a plus since we didn’t have a car I have kidney issues and have to drink 3 bottles a day Beds were very comfortable Room was quite large Our flight home was late and he gave us extra time Oh the trolleys around town run year round now so that worked out wonderfully
