Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city's museum district has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

Lovely staff, clean, convenient location, able to walk to some great restaurants like Sonoma Wine Bar, Dessert Gallery. We also brought our bicycles and rode to Memorial Park and explored that area.

A BIG FAT LIE - NOT RECOMMENDED I'd love to know why IHG brands allows this property to still wear their label. I used to stay there A LOT, but after Christmas 2022 when they didn't have ANY heat in the building I committed to no more. They have had signs up for 3-4 years now that they are under renovation. They must be doing that with only one party, and no materials or money to work with. Renovation is supposed to have a start and end, where the end is not infinity. Driving up on the building yields a sign that is half burned out, and it's just an indicator of what the guest is going to find inside. While they once were a full service hotel, only remnants of full services remain. There was no business center, the gift shop empty and boarded up, the garage elevators haven't worked since Jesus was in diapers, and the main elevators work now and then, but not on holidays, and there's no food on the menu in the restaurant. The staff made a big deal out of putting me in one of their recently renovated rooms. It's hard to feel like they have done anything for me when it's cold enough in there to hang meat. If I didn't have many memories of what once was, I might not feel like so much is gone. But, they still advertise they are a full service hotel, and they are…as long as you don't want to use any full services. The recent reports of people's cars being damaged, or broken into reveals the place is still heading for the ditch slowly. The franchisee clearly isn't spending anything caring for the property, and the IHG franchise quality police aren't doing anything to force them to fix it or take the brand off the building. I still associate IHG with Kemmons Wilson, and what I expect to get from a real Holiday Inn, and this place is just a fraction of that. They once gave away parking, but now they charge the customer $25/day so they can come back and find their car is broken into, and the garage elevators don't work, and have been that way for years. Any time I see a building allowed to rot this way leaves me wondering what ELSE they are not doing that's putting my safety at risk. It would surprise me none to learn the fire alarms aren't working, or that the boiler hasn't been inspected, as this is usually true when things the guest CAN see are so obviously being neglected. I'd like to stay there going forward as the location is perfect for my needs, but I just can't lay my money on the counter for such a deception. I sure wouldn't want to work for them, having to smile and pretend I'm representing a reputable property that is actually delivering what they are advertising. This place needs to be closed, and boarded up until a complete new interior is installed, or advertise it for what it is, which is certainly not full-service and barely adequate for a full-service hotel. The reviews written about this place this year alone reveal that the same problems that were present in 2022 are still there, and the only thing different is they are wanting even more money for less services. I would consider them again if they would return the quality to what Crown Plaza, or Holiday Inn is supposed to be. They sure aren't there yet.

Disappointed in parking facilities and charges. The parking garage elevator was not working and were not told when we checked in. No valet parking. The entrance in the parking lot smelled very moldy. Our room was very updated and very clean but we did not have a top sheet in bed but it was comfortable. A/C worked well. We stayed 2 nights but were charged 3 days for parking. The 3rd day we had to pay to raise the bar to exit. $25 per day…so $75. Add this to your hotel bill.

Parking is not secure Do not stay at this hotel. Several car were broken into on 1/12/25. An of course the Hotel will not take an responsibility. You had a security guard who obviously was not making his rounds and was probably watching Tic Tok videos while on the clock. This was suppose to be a secure parking garage with scan in access only. Inside job perhaps? Spend the extra $$ and stay somewhere with peace of mind. $2000 worth of damage done to vehicle for only a minimal take. Bitter ending to an otherwise great weekend.
