Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city's museum district has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

Horrible service This restaurant has terrible customer service, especially the restaurant in the afternoon shift. We went to eat and the waiter did not serve us. We spoke to him twice and he never came to our table. We had to order Uber Eat. We reported to the manager and told him that he was like that, that he only served the people he wanted, that he already had many reports and that nothing was happening. The waiter is an elderly man from Peru.

Disappointing Stay Despite Helpful Staff — Needs Serious Maintenance and Housekeeping Improvements Date of stay: July 3–7, 2025 Trip type: Family trip Room type: King Standard Worklife We chose the Crowne Plaza Houston Med Ctr–Galleria Area for a family trip to visit friends and relatives, hoping for a reliable experience from a major brand. Unfortunately, while there were a few positives, our stay was ultimately frustrating and disappointing. Check-In & Service: The best part of our stay was the service from Kirstin Williams at the front desk. She was efficient, professional, and made it easy to extend our reservation. Her attentiveness stood out. Room & Amenities: The King room was spacious and came with a small cube fridge. Breakfast was included and served buffet-style. It was typical fare but hot and surprisingly good. On-site parking was easy and accessible. Cleanliness & Facilities: The bathroom was not clean upon arrival, and our room did not include a safe—something we expected from a hotel in this tier. One of the biggest frustrations was the elevator situation. With only four elevators servicing 18 floors, we waited over 15 minutes to get to the lobby from the 16th floor at check-out time. Plumbing & Water Issues: The worst part was on our final day, when brown water came out of all the taps in our room. Staff said they’d notify maintenance, but the response suggested this was a recurring problem. Also, during peak weekend occupancy, the toilet took more than 15 minutes to refill, and hot water took a long time to reach the shower. Value: While rates were reasonable, the quality and consistency fell well below expectations for a Crowne Plaza. The stay didn’t justify the price. Would I recommend this hotel? No. While the front desk service was commendable, the maintenance, cleanliness, and water quality issues made this a stay we would not repeat. There are better options nearby for similar rates.
