Extremely Disappointing Experience at Courtyard by Marriott Manhattan Midtown My wife and I stayed for one night at the Courtyard by Marriott Manhattan Midtown to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We had booked a king-size bed room in advance. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Michael, a friendly gentleman with a warm smile who checked us in and mentioned that we had received an upgrade. It was a great start, and we appreciated his professionalism. However, when we entered our room, we discovered that it had two queen beds, not the king-size room we had booked. Since this was a special occasion and comfort was important to us, I went back to the front desk to clarify. Michael was no longer there, and another lady at the reception informed us—rather abruptly—that there were no king rooms available and that we would have to “take it or leave it.” There was no apology or explanation, which felt unprofessional and dismissive. I requested to speak with a manager, not to make a scene but to resolve the issue calmly. The assistant manager, Charissa K, arrived and reiterated that no king rooms were available, explaining that platinum and gold members were the hotel’s priority. I expressed my disappointment, explaining that we had specifically booked a king room for comfort. The most shocking part of the conversation was when Charissa told us that because we booked through a friends and family discount, the employee whose code we used “could get fired” if we made an issue. We were taken aback by this comment—it felt like a threat and completely inappropriate for a hospitality professional. We left feeling disappointed and disrespected. What was supposed to be a memorable anniversary turned into an unpleasant experience. This was our first and last stay at Courtyard by Marriott Manhattan Midtown. Not recommended.

Three Stars Only Because of the Location The location is fantastic if you need to be in Turtle Bay (Midtown East). The neighborhood is pretty safe (by NYC standards, which doesn't say much) The staff was VERY friendly. My room was on the 14th floor and I was surprised that I didn't hear a ton of road noise, but I do bring earplugs when staying in NYC. Overall, the place is in need of an overhaul. My room was an ADA room so I suspect that's why it was larger than most, as NYC hotel rooms are famously slightly larger than a shoe box. So that was nice...........BUT it was the DARKEST hotel room I've ever stayed in! When you walk in the closet is on the right & the door to the bathroom on the left. Just past the closet was a sconce that was fairy high up and was a soft light. That was it. No ceiling light. The only other lights were a light on the desk and a light on the nightstand between the beds. I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see in the closet, which was conveniently painted black in side (or was a dark faux wood), which made it impossible to see anything & I wound up just laying my clothes on the 2nd bed. The bathroom was roomy because again, it was an ADA room, but the only lights in there were embedded in either side of the mirror. No ceiling light in a fairly big bathroom. To take a shower, I had to keep the shower curtain open in the front just so I could see using the mirror light. To put on my makeup, I had to go to the left side of the mirror to do the left side of my face and then over to the right side and back and forth. The sink needed some Liquid Plumber and would fill up quickly. Lastly the TV guide shows all the channels and all are available EXCEPT Fox News, which brought you to a black screen. MSNBC & CNN worked just fine. Considering what they charge, there are several other choices in the area.

Good The hotel has a great location, within walking distance of many popular attractions and plenty of good restaurants nearby. The rooms are comfortable and overall well-kept. My only minor concerns were that the soundproofing could be better, a handheld shower head would have been more convenient, and there was a small draft under the AC unit. Aside from these details, the hotel offers very good value for the price.
