Wisconsin Dells: Picturesque Scenery and Family Entertainment

Before the Dells became synonymous with water parks and amusement rides, the Midwestern destination’s claim to fame was its scenery. Visitors in the mid-1940s came to see the craggy rock formations that frame both sides of the Wisconsin River. These bluffs—or dells—are still visible today from the downtown area, which is rife with kitschy attractions, from mini-golf courses to go-kart tracks.

But it’s safe to say that most visitors nowadays come for the water parks. In fact, the Dells area likely has more water slides per capita than any other spot on the planet. The fun doesn’t stop in the cooler months, either, thanks to a slew of indoor aquatic centers, many of which are nearly as elaborate as their outdoor rivals.

The owner was very laid back. Respect his property and he’ll pretty much let you do whatever, just clean up as yourself.

Disappointing Stay with a Few Bright Spots We recently stayed at Delton Oaks and while there were some great aspects, several things really missed the mark. First, the office hours aren’t reliable. We arrived right after 5pm for check-in and no one was there. Then the next morning, I went at 8:15am to switch out towels and was told by a kid to come back at 8am, even though it was 8:15. When we got into our room, I found a form I had to sign stating I didn’t have a dog, even though I booked through BringFido, my reservation clearly stated it was a pet stay, I emailed ahead, and I even spoke on the phone with someone in the office twice. I called the emergency number provided since the office was closed, and the man who answered tried to argue that they had called me and I never called back. But that’s not true. I had spoken to the office, and they knew my check-in time. He then charged me $30 per night for my dog, even though the website says $25. So I was up-charged $10 for the 2-night stay. There was no signage anywhere indicating where dogs are allowed to go to the bathroom. I picked a patch of grass away from the beach, and a woman came over very rudely to tell me dogs aren’t allowed there but didn’t explain where they are allowed until I asked. Apparently, it’s in the front by a busy road, which doesn’t feel safe or pet-friendly. My dog was briefly off-leash because the resort’s own policy says off-leash is allowed if the dog listens to commands, and mine absolutely does. However, the woman told me it’s against city ordinance and must be leashed at all times. That’s fine, but then the resort policy needs to reflect that. As a visitor, I follow the resort's rules, not local laws I’m unaware of. Other small inconveniences: there’s no toaster, no extra garbage bags, bathroom smelled of urine, extremely cramped with no side tables anywhere, small shower area, took about 15 minutes for the water to get hot, and no one on-site overnight. Our upstairs neighbors blasted music from 11pm all night and had barking dogs. I tried contacting the emergency numbers and got no response, so we were stuck with no help or resolution. That said, there were positives. The pontoon boat rental was a highlight- granted it was dirty and the ladder to get in the boat was broken. The kids enjoyed it though. The room was nicely updated. The beach and pool were clean. The front desk woman I interacted with Thursday morning was incredibly helpful and friendly. She helped us with the pontoon rental and was the best staff interaction we had all trip. All in all, for the price, I give it 2 stars. There’s definitely potential here, but the lack of consistency, poor communication, and after-hours unresponsiveness need to be addressed. I will probably be staying at other resorts on Lake Delton in the future.

SECRET GEM OF THE DELLS! FANTASTIC PLACE TO STAY!!! Prime spot on the Lake! Ideal location in the Dells. Privately owned resort with that family feel. On Friday night they had a house party with live entertainment right on the beach where kids and couples alike danced the night away. Such a fun atmosphere!! Staff was super friendly and helpful. Rooms were nice and clean, seemed to be newly updated. We did rent one of their pontoons for a cruise around the lake which could have used a good hose down before we took off, but other than that, it was an awesome stay and we highly recommend!

Five Stars! Perfect Spot for Our Baseball Team Stay We recently stayed at Delton Oaks with our youth baseball team, and it was absolutely perfect for our group. The accommodations were clean and comfortable, and the staff was friendly and welcoming from the start. What really made the experience special was the access to the lake and all the fun that came with it. After long days of games, it was amazing to have the kids unwind by swimming in the pool, kayaking on the lake, or just playing along the shoreline. We also took advantage of the pontoon rental, which was a big hit with both the players and the parents. It was a great way to relax and enjoy the beautiful setting. The atmosphere was laid back and family friendly, and there was plenty of space for everyone to relax and connect. It gave the team a chance to bond outside of baseball and make some really fun memories together. Highly recommend Delton Oaks for any team or group looking for a fun, relaxing place to stay in the Dells.
