San Diego, California: Historical Attractions and Electric Nightlife in Southern California

San Diego’s sunny, comfortably warm weather and 70 miles of coastline have long attracted vacationing out-of-towners, but the city’s inland scene is no slouch, either. The Gaslamp Quarter is arguably the trendiest listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The area forms both the historic center of town and a hub of San Diego nightlife, with nearly 100 Victorian-era buildings occupied by high-end boutiques, jewelers, and gourmet restaurants.

A stroll through iconic Balboa Park takes you past 17 separate museums, as well as the world-famous and much beloved San Diego Zoo. There’s also the vibrant Spanish Village Art Center, a living gallery where local artists produce pottery, handblown glass, and oil paintings for sale.

Farther north, in Old Town—site of the first European settlement in California—shops in Mission-style stucco buildings sell colorful wrestling masks, woven baskets, and maracas. Nearby stands the Whaley House Museum, dubbed one of the Most Terrifying Places in America by the Travel Channel. Ghosts of former residents are said to inhabit the rooms, which are filled with Victorian furniture, eerie dolls, and squeegees for ectoplasm cleanup.

When we arrived around 9:00 pm, there was no room for us. "Someone" had checked us in and out around 11:00 that morning, which cancelled our prepaid reservation. Very, very, very poor service.

Room not clean--carpet fifthly, no bath towels, no coffee filters, no complimentary coffee condiments, dishes and silverware not clean, kitchen booth has prior food between the seats, no butter knife, no bath soap. Office staff rude and oblivious.

Be ready to walk Rooms are recently renovated and nice but good luck ever finding parking. You are given a little paper parking permit but that literally means nothing. Any parking around the hotel is usually taken by people visiting the beach. And the office is closed and to check in you have to go to another hotel 2 blocks away. Honestly those two things are such an inconvenience especially when you can’t find anywhere within a 2 block radius to park at your hotel, that I would not recommend staying here

A pleasant surprise! Well done Diamond Head Inn. I was worried prior to booking as I read somewhere this is rated a 2 star (maybe 2.5 star)? I've never stayed at a "2 star" hotel and if this really is one, I need to expand my horizons more. IT WAS NICE and had everything needed. Comfortable bed, good shower, fridge, hotplate, micowave, etc. AND STEPS TO THE BEACH. Very fairly priced. I can be picky and I just can't come up with anything to complain about. Being so close to the beach, I was concerned about noise, loitering, etc. NONE OF THAT HAPPENED. And, I appreciate the fact I was not bothered at all during my 3 night stay and never even heard the housekeepers as they cleaned the rooms during the day. I'm coming back for sure. Note about check-in: EVERYONE here says you have to check in at their sister property 1 block away, but nobody ever gives the freaking address so here it is: Pacific Beach Surf, 4760 Mission Boulevard. Easy walk. You can TRY to snag one of the 4 spots that Diamond Head has first and if no luck, just go to Pacific Beach Surf where you can park (free if guest at Diamond Head) and walk. OR, just go straight to Pacific Beach Surf hotel. And finally, I wish to thank VANESSA. I had a small issue upon check in and she went above and beyond to alleviate what could have been a disaster. Thank you Vanessa! As she is the only "face" to Diamond Head that I had interaction with, I hope they pay you well as you are a good representative of this hotel. Only positive thoughts about my entire experience there and it began with Vanessa.

Horrible I am heartbroken - I have been staying at the Diamond Head Inn for 15 years - unfortunately it has declined so much I will not stay here again. Our room with the ocean view smelled like cat urine. There are stains on the walls. There are cockroaches on the walkways.
