Times Square, Manhattan: Flashy Neon Lights and World-Class Culture

Times Square is at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The famous address—affectionately known as “the Crossroads of the World”—is home to hypnotizing billboards, giant wraparound news tickers, and the neon lights of Broadway. Beyond the glitz and gimmicks, there are a number of cultural offerings in the area, ranging from museums to Michelin-rated restaurants. Buildings of historical and architectural interest include the Paramount Building and One Times Square, site of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop.

Nearby, the Museum of Modern Art houses a trove of masterpieces including Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Claude Monet’s Water Lilies paintings, and Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. Save time for a stroll through the museum’s outdoor sculpture garden, where installations are clustered around sparkling reflecting pools. About a mile north of Times Square, the David H. Koch Theater is home to one of the world’s foremost dance companies—the New York City Ballet, which stages contemporary works as well as classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Comfortable, clean, helpful staff I came to NYC for work and had a pleasant stay at Voco. The rooms were clean and fully equipped with everything I needed. The staff are friendly and helpful, particularly Johan at the front desk. The breakfast was good. We could order one entree with a drink as part of our booking and I really liked the omelette. The hotel can get quite busy, especially in the mornings, and sometimes you have to wait a long time for the elevators. That was perhaps the only downside, but not a big deal.

Great stay This was the perfect hotel for our needs, out all day and somewhere to have a quick drink and crash at night. Room was comfortable with a large bathroom. Charging points on the bedside tables, fresh towels every day etc. The only issue was one of the female concierges. And I am only mentioning this as we found out the concierges are NOT part of the hotel and wanted to make that very clear. She was so rude, unapproachable and really shouldn’t be in a public facing role. When we mentioned it to front desk staff , without prompting their response was “oh she is mean!” They knew who she was and seemed upset that people would assume she represented the hotel. The other staff were wonderful.

Expected more for a four star hotel This was our first visit to New York and this could be the four star standard in which case this review may be more harsh than it should. The room is small for over £300 per night. There was a lack of storage for our luggage and clothing, most of which remained packed forcing us to rummage through to find what we wanted during our 7 night stay. A hot drinks machine is available with various tea and coffee pods, powdered creamer and UHT milk pods. All replaced on a daily basis. A hair dryer, iron with short ironing board is available, also a good sized TV with a wide selection of channels, but there is no fridge. The bathroom was of an aceptable size with the exception of the shower. The door opens inward, but due to the short length, it would be a tight squeeze for larger guests to stand in the corner with shelving behind when closing the door. It was reasonably powerful and nice and hot. There were two complimentary bottles of water, the only ones we would be entitles to during our stay. There is a water dispenser on the ground floor (first floor in the USA) which is free to use and an ice maching on the lower ground floor (basement level). Other drinks and snack are available to purchase here. Breakfast was included in our reservation. There is a choice from eight along with a hot drink. The breakfast's were enjoyable, something different everyday for us. Depending on our activities for the day, we sometimes had a later breakfast which is served until 1030. This on occasion could be a bit of an issue as some business people would use the dining area which is not segregated as with most hotels. Issues we had were: No power to a bedside table. Reported the following morning and partially fixed later that day. Two poer points worked and one of two USB ports worked, This also included a loose wall socket which may or may not have contributed to the issue. Security latch on the door had loose screws. Reported, but not fixed during our stay. Not an issue for us as keycards are required to gain use of the lifts and there are only eight rooms on our floor, so very quiet. One lift was not working upon check-in. This created a huge lag in guests moving between floors. We had to wait nearly 10 minutes on several occasions, but more often less than five on most other occasions. After our moning breakfast the only functionng lift appeared to be having some issues as the floor number was not being displayed. After a guest exited the lift on floor five, we then became stuck before floor twelve which would have been the next stop for another guest. My first time being stuck in a hot lift lasted less than 10 minutes when we returned to the ground floor. Some guests left the lift, my wife was a bit aprehensive as she had become stuck in a lift in Thailand when a child and was forced to climb out the foor hatch. We sated put and the lift appeard to function as normal, minus the floor number being displayed. When we returned that evening, both lifts were running smoothly and again the following morning. That evening, we were back to one lift again as lift 2 had broken again. Still not working in the morning, but fixed upon our return in the evening. This repeated itself two more times during our stay.
