Memphis, Tennessee: Blues on Beale Street and Slow-Cooked Barbecue

One of the best ways to experience Memphis is through your stomach. No trip to the city is complete without trying a full plate of Memphis-style barbecue. Ribs can be served wet (brushed with tangy sauce before, during, and after cooking) or, more commonly, dry (rubbed in spices and cooked in a smoker). Memphis has embraced the national food-truck trend, so some of the city’s best cuisine can now be enjoyed on the go.

Another important aspect of Memphis is its storied music scene. Thanks to Sam Phillips’s Sun Studio and the pioneers at Stax Records, the city has played a pivotal role in nearly every genre of American music, including rock, country, soul, and the blues. B. B. King, Elvis Presley, and John Lee Hooker are some of the many musicians who got their start here, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music chronicles the contributions of several more, including Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, and Sam & Dave. Each night, you can still hear excellent live music on Beale Street—both in the clubs and while strolling down the sidewalk.

Dump. Stay next door at the Garden Inn. Dingy room, loud AC and musty smell, rude staff, no AC in hallways, paint peeling in the room. This property is tired and mismanaged. The Garden Inn next door is a much better choice. Don’t stay at this property. There also isn’t a safe in the room if you care. I’ve been Hilton Diamond, Gold now, and this place is a few steps above a Super 8.

A handy hotel for all the action The hotel is located very near to all thecaction in Memphis. We were welcomed in at check-in by a friendly desk clerk. The room, I felt was not up to Hilton standards. In my opinion it wa a little under par. The amenities in the room, cleanliness etc was fine however thehe bathroom, although it had a shower above the bath, the enamel on the bath was flaking away in parts. There was no safe in the room, but on enquiries at the desk, there are safes available for use at no cost, just ask at the desk.

Great hotel across the street from Autozone park and wasy walking distance to many restaurants and tourist attractions I have been in Memphis for about a week for work. This hotel is very convenient to lots if stuff in Memphis, easy walking distance. The people at the front desk were amazingly helpful, breakfast dinner and beer in the King& Union were also very good. I picked a room 401 with a view across the street to Autozone park but found I had to close the curtains all the way to keep the bright park signs from keeping me awake. I didn’t need it this trip but they seem to have efficient valet parking. I had to extend my stay twice due to Amtrak cancelling my reserved trains and the hotel was very accommodating do I could stay in the same room. I will stay here again on my next work trip to Memphis.
