Manhattan's Financial District: Wall Street, Skyscrapers, and the 9/11 Memorial

Once the sole province of day traders and bankers working frenetic jobs at the New York Stock Exchange and on Wall Street, the Financial District has attracted its fair share of full-time residents in recent years. Today, more than 56,000 people live in the neighborhood, which borders The Battery on the southern tip of Manhattan.

The population boom has helped expose the neighborhood’s occasionally overlooked cultural attractions. At the eastern edge of Fulton Street, the revitalized South Street Seaport historic district is home to some of the oldest architecture in downtown Manhattan as well as a fleet of renovated sailing ships and an up-close view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The district is also home to the towering One World Trade Center, which is now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Right next door, a memorial to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the September 11th attacks is now open for visits, along with a museum.

Great Staff, poor operation I specifically left notes about a request for a high floor with a view and though it’s based on availability, it seems that no effort was made as I got the complete opposite. I got an unpleasant view overlooking other buildings on a low floor. All front desk staff were pleasant. Housekeeping was knocking on my door by 9:30am when check out was 11:00am. Very tiny room and poor lighting. The location and staff were the best things about the hotel.

Elevator madness, but affordable NYC stay Comfortable room. Great treatment as a rewards member. Friendly staff. Affordable as this was a rare personal stay (not covered on a business trip) My review reduced major points for the elevator situation. They have to be the most overworked or slowest in NYC. You literally need to plan ahead by 15 minutes in the morning. Suggest staying on a lower floor so you can take the stairs. My 42nd floor city view was nice, but next time would forgo the view for convenience. Heavily used by large foreign tourist groups, and as a former NYer, I hope they don’t think all NYC elevators are this poor! Plan ahead in the morning for anyone catching a tour with a starting time!

Second Stay, Good as the First This is my second stay with Doubletree Downtown and I have to say it was as good as the first. Let's get this out of the way upfront: the elevator can be baaaaaaad. Some days you will walk right on. Other days you will wait 15 minutes for one to arrive, and when it does, it will be packed so full you won't be able to get on. Plan your days a bit so that you are not leaving at the last minute. Use the stairs where you are able. Now on to the rest of the review. The room was lovely and clean, modern and tastefully decorated and had a very comfortable bed. For being downtown in the fray, the room was so quiet, and the air conditioner was the only small amount of noise (ex other guests of course). Every day that you want the cleaning service, you will get it. They replenish towels and coffee, make the bed, clean the room. If you do not want this service daily, simply hang the sign on your door and they will skip your room. Price was good for NYC. Hotel is located directly near the R, W, 4, 5, 6, and 1 trains. It is less than a 5 minute walk to the Wall Street Bull - tip: go VERY early in the morning and there won't be a soul about and you will get the best picture possible of this iconic monument. It is walking distance (about 5-7 minutes) to the Staten Island Ferry and the Governor's Island Ferry. This is a very well-located hotel for tourists and business travellers alike. All the people I encountered were friendly and when I slipped and fell on the slippery tiles in the bathroom, I went downstairs to alert the staff and ask that they make it a bit safer in there. The desk clerk was lovely and apologetic and gave me courtesy points on my HHonors Account - even though I did not ask for anything, I was simply bringing the safety issue to their attention. Overall, this is a very good stay, and I would come back again. The only issue is the elevator and I just do not feel that is worth knocking a star off for.
