Scottsdale, Arizona: Stucco Mansions amid Rocky Desert Landscape

Scottsdale once served as ranch land where farmers grew oranges and lemons and cowboys kicked up dust in the fierce, dry heat of the Sonoran Desert. That era earned Scottsdale the nickname of “The West's Most Western Town.” Today, it is an affluent city landscaped with lush green grass and lined with stucco mansions. For a glimpse of the city's Old West roots, head to Old Town Scottsdale, where wooden boardwalks and hitching posts sit in front of a retro ice-cream parlor and rustic specialty shops.

Upon arriving in Scottsdale, you know you're in the desert—cacti and tumbleweeds dot the landscape, and dry shrubs and gnarled trees cover the McDowell Mountains in the distance. To get a closer look at Southwestern flora, head to the Desert Botanical Garden. There, themed trails wind past huge cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents, best seen in the cooler early morning or twilight hours.

mostly ok but not without some issues Upon arrival, we were told that while we did book for two adults and one teen, only the adults get the breakfast included, we would need to pay for the kid. I argued that when I booked with Expedia, I provided the ages of all 3 travelers and selected the room with the breakfast included specifically, which was more expensive. The reservation said "free breakfast". I was only told to pay the resort fee. After some back and forth they agreed to provide us the breakfast for all 3. The room was nice and clean, and well equipped. One thing I really hated was the exhaust fan in the bathroom, it was so noisy that I was unsure about using it early in the morning or late at night. On the little balcony there was a table but no chairs. I noticed that each room had some chairs, so I asked at the reception to get us some. I had to ask again later the same day because somehow that ticket got lost in processing ;) Speaking of the rooms, I only wish there was one more chair inside. It seems the rooms target 1-2 people max. Parking at the hotel is relatively easy, we were able to find a spot just next to our room almost every day. No issues there. On the second day when we returned relatively late, we have found that none of our keys was working. The lock did not even show any signs of life. I suspected that the battery inside has died. We went to the reception and the problem was addressed immediately. Strangely enough, next day when we returned back from our activities, we found that the room door was open (slightly). And the room was not cleaned. I suspected that maybe the maid opened it but then got distracted with something. By the way, two maids we have met did not speak English at all. I have checked the room, and since nothing was removed I decided not to make a story out of it. Pool areas are OK, but not very large. Since it was too hot during the day, we only used the pools after the sunset. The hotel was quite empty, so it was always easy to find a place near the pool. Ice-cold water and fresh towels were provided all the time, although they did not remove the used towels so, at the end of the day, there was quite a pile. There is a microwave oven near Starbucks, very convenient for reheating some food leftovers the next day. The lady at the reception (sorry, I forgot the name) was very helpful, always met people with the smile and offered tasty cookies and water. There is some chaos with room cleaning, I think. Our rooms have not been cleaned for two days, on the second day I asked at the reception and then it was done sometime later in the afternoon. I think their maids are moving randomly between the rooms, taking care of the ones where people check out first. Do not ignore the $15 credit they offer for the external activities. It was not obvious what was it, so we asked. Turned out, if you visit a museum, Aquarium etc, you can bring the receipt to the reception and get $15 off your resort fee, for each day.

Great stay ! This place was amazing. I read lots of reviews with mixed signals, so I figured I’d try it for myself. This place is amazing from the time I pulled up which I was greeted by a valet until the time I checked in, I felt comfortable here. The two concierges were over-the-top amazing. They were so personable however, maintaining that line of professionalism. I had to get their names so this review is for you, Shannon and Yamilet. Not only did these two ladies provide an assortment of restaurants in your area, but they were equally amazing as they provided the best route to get to our engagement. So if you’re ever in the area of Scottsdale or you’re attending some kind of an event in Glendale, go over and stay at the Doubletree Hilton in Paradise Valley.

Wonderful This is a wonderful resort. The breakfast each day was great with something unique every morning. Yesenia was an attentive and outstanding waitress. The front desk people were welcoming and always had warm delicious cookies available. The complimentary shuttle was a nice feature as well. The pool area was very nice. Definitely would return.
