Hotel at a Glance: Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino

Some of Las Vegas' biggest attractions are right outside the door—the Fremont Street Experience is a block away—but guests at the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino have little reason to leave the premises. The hotel fills an entire city block, which leaves plenty of room for its 25,000-square-foot casino, multiple bars and restaurants, and a rooftop infinity pool. Back in the 1,124 guest rooms, visitors can kick back on a pillow-top bed and watch a movie on a flat-screen TV.

  • Share vacation photos with ease over the WiFi network.
  • 500: That's approximately how many slot machines you'll find in the casino.
  • Lounge on the roof beside the pool and have a drink at the Citrus Grand Pool Deck.
  • Notable accolade: TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice award.

Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

My favorite place to stay I have stayed at Wynn and a few other places in Vegas, and while they are nice, The Grand actually welcomes me like family. I stay here during the Punk Rock Bowling Festival and every staff member goes out of their way to make sure it's a wonderful experience. I often do the room block through the festival but have to add a night on at the beginning and two years in a row I've been able to stay in my first room (so no packing up, checking in and out, etc.). Everything is clean and doesn't feel rundown or worn out, which I appreciate in a high volume place like Las Vegas. The Art Bar has good basic breakfast needs so I don't have to leave the hotel. Good coffee, breakfast sandwiches and at a decent price. You can't beat the $3 hot dog-PBR special that the hotel runs daily, either. Yes, there is a resort fee, but I don't mind it here where everything works and feels like you are getting your money's worth. Bathrooms are spotless, bedding is clean, soft, and provides a great night's rest. Nothing in the rooms is broken or damaged. I don't often find that I can really relax in hotels--there's always something wrong--but not here. When I am at the Grand, I reallly am on vacation. I also have to compliment the staff again for their kindness. This year, I was in the queue to check in and Aundrea, a manager, walked past and--even though I was next in line--offered to check me in at the concierge desk. Again, she made it so that I didn't have to switch rooms after my first night stay (booked through Priceline), and I was thrilled that the Grand offered a "3rd night free" special when I booked the rest of my stay through the hotel website so no switching rooms. She asked if I preferred a room on the mountain side or the Fremont side, which I appreciated so much (mountain side for the sunrises and sunsets, thank you!). And by the end of my check-in, we had exchanged some brief stories about our current hardships (I had just gotten a devastating health diagnosis and was celebrating my birthday this weekend) and she exhibited so much care for my situation. I wasn't treated like just another hotel guest, getting great service--she really cared enough to offer encouragement, kindness, and a hug, which is exactly what I needed in that moment. Thank you, Aundrea, for being a wonderful staff member here, and for making my stay for this festival (and my birthday) such a good experience!!

Fine hotel, but missing some key items for some strange reason. Hotel is clean and nice. Staff was very cool. No real complaints, but it was missing some things that I've never seen absent from a hotel. The rooms are good sized, but there's just like a lot of empty space. Putting a chair or a small couch in the void would be nice and hey, maybe someone might want to sit in them when they're in their room doing some work or reading a book. Also I was baffled to find out that the room has no mini fridge and no coffee maker. This was a first for me. I've literally never been in a hotel, big or small that did not have those two appliances. I asked them if they just forgot to put them in my room and they said no, they don't provide them. So all in all a fine and clean hotel for a short stay in downtown Las Vegas, but if you require or expect any of the things I listed, you'll not be getting them at the Downtown Grand.
