Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Discriminated against for Medical Condition Please save yourself the humiliation and embarrassment the front office supervisor dragged me through. I am traveling with my service animal and was accosted for not immediately announcing my service animal to him personally (I was not even finished with the check-in process because one has to do that by themselves on a kiosk). While I was trying to sort out the kiosk he kept yelling and harassing me and loudly asking me what my medical condition is, in front of many other guests in the lobby at that time. Obviously all of that is in complete violation of ADA and HIIPA and I will file federal suits for that separately. As he was yelling at me, I calmly asked to speak to him on the side once I am done with the kiosk so I can provide him with the details he was illegally asking for. He denied my request and chose to call security instead to have me removed from the property. I would like to note the gentleman that arrived from security within about 10 minutes (I waited there calmly as the supervisor continued not wanting to talk to me) was very courteous and professional. He was calm and asked me about my situation, trying to hear what I had to say and then relayed that to the supervisor. The supervisor instead acted like a 5 year old child, pouting and not being interested in accommodating my disability what so ever. He said I had to leave and would be issued a refund. Of course I complied and immediately left. I cannot review the rooms or public areas as I did not stay at the property. I simply want to use this review as an opportunity to warn fellow travelers of this business discriminating practices against patrons with medical conditions.
