Calistoga, California: Down-to-Earth Hamlet in Northern Napa Valley

The story goes like this: 19th-century developer Samuel Brannan wanted to create a West Coast version of Saratoga Springs (renowned at the time for its mineral spas), but he had been drinking when he made the announcement and so the name came out garbled as the "Calistoga of Sarifornia." This origin myth sounds a little fishy, but nevertheless, Brannan's vision of creating a relaxing-and-therapeutic Napa Valley getaway was eventually realized. Thanks to the area's natural hot springs, a slew of spas sprang up, offering restorative mineral soaks and mud baths. You can still find many such businesses peppered among the restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries lining Calistoga's quiet main street, which is set against a backdrop of rolling hills.

Those hills are home to some of Napa Valley's more than 400 wineries, many of which lie within a short drive of downtown Calistoga. The curious wine lover can choose from an array of vineyard experiences, ranging from tours to tastings at wineries modeled on English castles and Tuscan villas. One word of warning: many of these places require reservations, so be sure to book in advance.

Relaxing weekend I’ve stayed at a couple places in Calistoga, and I would definitely come back to Doc’s! The staff was wonderful — friendly, helpful, accommodating, upbeat. They’ve created a wonderful environment that is laid back and fun. There were quite a few families (with very well behaved kids), couples, friend groups; it really is for everyone. The pools and spa garden were relaxing and warm. The rooms were upscale and modern. The amenities and little extras — like a diffuser in the room and cute refillable water bottles — were a nice touch. Only drawbacks: our room faced the pool, and in the afternoon and all the way until 10pm the music was very loud. It’s not that it was party music either — it was a VERY random assortment of music, some of it actually kind of depressing — and you couldn’t escape it. Also, the food at the restaurant was fine but pricey; would have expected a lot more for the cost.

Swamp coolers in 2024? Bad experience Review of Dr. Wilkinson Resort My recent stay at Dr. Wilkinson Resort was highly disappointing and far from the pleasant experience I had during my previous visit. Issues with the Room: 1. The AC unit in our room was a swamp cooler, which was significantly worse than staying at a low-end motel. The cooling system was inadequate and barely made a difference in the room temperature. 2. The room smelled moldy, making it difficult to feel comfortable or relaxed. 3. Both the bed and pillows were extremely uncomfortable and flat, providing little to no support. Sleep Deprivation: Due to the broken AC unit and the unpleasant smell and discomfort of the bed and pillows, we were unable to sleep at all. We were so uncomfortable that we got up at 4:30 AM to speak with the front desk. Room Change: The front desk moved us to another room, which, to our surprise, had a newer AC system with a thermostat. This room was 15 degrees cooler than our original one. We left our belongings in the first room and attempted to sleep in the new room, but we only managed to get 3 hours of rest. Poor Customer Service: The front desk lady was dismissive and tried to gaslight us by claiming that our original room had one of the best AC units in the hotel. This was far from the truth and only added to our frustration. Comparing Past and Present Stays: I had stayed at this resort once before, and that experience was much more pleasant. The room last year was cleaner, smelled better, and had a comfortable bed with a thermostat and a working AC unit. Conclusion: This recent stay was the worst experience I’ve had at Dr. Wilkinson Resort. Given the high one-night rate, the poor room conditions, and the subpar customer service, we will not be returning. It’s simply not worth the cost.

Everything you need in one place Really great stay at the top of Napa Valley! This was an awesome home base for our stay while in the Napa area. Calistoga is such a quaint town, and we loved all the vintage/retro touches of Dr. Wilkinson’s and nearby spots like Calistoga Depot, the many boutique stores and shops, and wineries all in walking distance (Tank Garage and Lola). It’s also an incredible home base for exploring the hundreds of Napa wineries, with about a 30-45 minute driving radius to all the best spots. We also really liked the wellness focus, with things like essential oil diffusers in the rooms and mineral water refill stations around the property. The outdoor pools were a God-send in the 100+ degree weather, and it was nice being able to order food and drinks to be delivered (although quite pricey… $18 for chips and guac, really?) Our favorite thing we did was get a couples massage—our massage therapists were amazing and we both agreed it was one of the better massages we’ve gotten in quite some time. Super relaxing and we liked being able to rest in the spa garden and jacuzzi with a cold ice water bucket plunge. Overall, our room was one of the most spacious and clean we had during our week-long road trip up the California coast and the shower water pressure was excellent. Another upside is that this is a Marriott-owned hotel, meaning we were able to use points to pay for a majority of our stay. The only downsides were that paying with cash is expensive (I don’t know if I could justify spending a full $600+ a night here) and the coffee was AWFUL—one of the worst iced lattes I’ve ever tasted. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and liked getting to explore Calistoga, but don’t know if it would warrant another stay if we were headed to Napa again. Too many other places to explore!

Great location, neat property, not the relaxing experience it once was You can be a relaxing spa destination for "adults at play," or you can be a kid-focused water park, but it's hard to see how you can be both. This is a special property with tons of mid-century motor lodge charm, walking distance from anything you need in Calistoga. It was fully renovated several years back and we've stayed 6 or 7 times since then. Though prices have crept up with each visit we've had a great time -- till this weekend. The wet areas were completely taken over by kids screaming, running, jumping in the pools, using water guns, having tantrums, you know -- kid stuff. Which is fine in a vacuum, but this property has "wellness" at the core of its brand and identity. There was not a moment of peace and quiet from the time the pools opened till dinner time. Which, again, if that's your thing and what you want to focus on as a property, that's fine, but the branding and marketing need to change pretty significantly. At almost eight hundred per night this would have to be for a special occasion rather than a weekend escape, and I just don't see how a couple seeking a breather or something akin to a "wellness retreat" would enjoy it in its current state. But for families looking for somewhere to let the kinds go bananas, go for it!

Nice. Expensive with some limitations Very pleasant stay in a unique environment. Rooms are clean and updated, although the building itself is cramped and noise from other rooms/upstairs can be a problem. Basically a renovated 60's era motel. Nice pools and mineral bath. On site restaurant good, but very limited hours. Room rates very expensive and not a good value for the money, but such is high season in Napa? Very friendly and helpful staff. Would be rated much higher if better priced.
