Crested Butte, Colorado: Small Ski-Resort Town in the Rockies with Authentic Old West Charm

Crested Butte sits at 9,000 feet in southwest Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where it’s surrounded by some lovely scenery. Aspen groves dot the upper valleys of the town’s namesake peak, as well as fields of fiery Indian paintbrush. In addition to just looking pretty, the gorgeous landscape offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, mountain biking through 750 miles of bike trails, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, and art and music festivals in the summer months, and skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and dog sledding during the winter months.

After a resort area was built on Mount Crested Butte in 1961, the former coal-mining town emerged as a major ski center, particularly for extreme skiers. Outside of winter sports and activities, Butte has become center for o Despite this rapid transformation, Crested Butte has preserved its roots. Victorian storefronts and art galleries line downtown Elk Avenue, and there’s a famous rum distillery that welcomes visitors year-round. For a glimpse into the town’s history, head to the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, which has an elaborate diorama that depicts life in the mining days of the 1920s.

Disappointing from start to finish I should have realised when I used the restrooms in lobby before checking in and found that 2 out of 3 were out of order that things were not going to be as expected. The room we received was outdated, neglected and dirty. Three out of four of our pillows had stains as did the sheets. The white towels were grey and threadbare. We went to the hotel restaurant for one drink after checking in and the service was slow and we were served by at least 3 different people who really looked like they didn’t like their job. The best thing about this hotel is the short distance to Crested Butte. It’s a cute town with great bars and restaurants where we had an excellent dinner. The shower in this hotel is the worst I have ever experienced. There was so little water and pressure that I couldn’t get the soap out of my hair. We had booked a 2 night stay, but we decided to check out after one night. We explained why we were leaving early and requested a refund, but we told we could only be refunded the parking and resort fee. This hotel needs a total renovation. Don’t waste your money staying here.

Awful Nope. Don't even think about it. You're better off sleeping in your car. When I walked into the lobby I wasn't sure if the hotel was open or had been condemned. It's a filthy, outdated, has been. Bonus, they charge a resort fee in case you want to swim in their cess pool or take a dip in a hot covid tub. I've traveled to 45 states and 15 countries and this is the worst place I have ever stayed. No AC in the units. Do yourself a favor and stay at a camp ground.

Horrible I have to say, my recent stay here was lackluster and very disappointing. My wife and I stayed with our 8 month old and dog for Memorial Day weekend. We have been eaten alive by god knows what in the bed, found glass on the floor on numerous occasions (great with a dog and kid crawling around) and were welcomed our first night by one of their employees 2 dogs charging us in the parking garage while we were unloading. No one once came to our room and changed anything out, trash, linens, or towels. Yes, we went during slow season, and they are renovating the hotel soon, but just shut it down now if they don’t plan to operate like they should be. It’s horrific given what we were paying a night. Highly recommend anywhere other than here.
