Coquitlam, British Columbia: Hiking Trails and Art Galleries Outside Vancouver

Less than a half-hour drive from Vancouver’s glittering skyscrapers, Coquitlam presents a peaceful landscape of wooded trails and pine-topped hillsides near the intersection for the Fraser and Coquitlam Rivers. Old-growth trees shade the trails of Riverview Forest, making it ideal for hikers and cyclists. Nearby, you can spot wild deer, geese, and black bears roaming Mundy Park’s more than 400 acres.

In Coquitlam’s charming downtown area, sweet smells waft from old-fashioned bakeries and chefs sizzle authentic Indian and Vietnamese dishes at internationally inspired restaurants. Local artwork takes center stage at the Place des Arts, a collection of galleries, performance spaces, and shops where you can see artisans at work. I was worried after seeing reviews about out dated rooms but there is a sign in the elevator stating they’re going through updates. Our room was nice :) nothing extremely fancy but it was updated and had some class. We enjoyed our stay and tap house next door was awesome! I’d stay again!

Our stay at the Executive Hotel Coquitlam The hotel is very well located, no need for your car. The skytrain is only steps away. The staff have always bent over backwards to help in anyway they can. We have stayed here several times. The Fig restaurant located in the hotel serves a very good breakfast and dinner. The wait staff are very good. Last night Barbara took such good care of us. It’s staff like her that keeps me coming back. I quite often travel on my own but with staff like her and the other staff I never feel unsafe. Thank you for always making our stays so comfortable.

Great location with many nearby amenities This hotel provides an excellent location for travel within Coquitlam/Lougheed as one of the only decent accommodation options in the area. Great central location with many amenities nearby, including Lougheed Shopping Centre, the Lougheed Skytrain station, and the Wild Fig restaurant. Updated rooms are clean and comfortable, but beware of travelling during the summer - the air conditioning in our room was no match for the heat that radiated through the old, floor-to-ceiling windows. Guest services was very understanding of this situation and made sure to take this into account during our stay. The Lougheed Town Centre area has unfortunately been overcome by the unhoused, and this presents a safety concern - in response, the hotel has a security guard in the lobby 24/7 to deter non-guests, and the parking garage, while unsecured, is monitored by many surveillance cameras.

Some concerns While the overall experience was pleasant (Aug 17-25), there are a few issues that significantly impacted my comfort, safety, and well-being. Firstly, I was surprised to find that both beds in my room and others were not equipped with fitted sheets. As a result, the sheets would constantly come off during the night, leading to discomfort and a poor sleep experience. I would expect a hotel of this caliber to provide fitted sheets to ensure a comfortable and restful stay for their guests. Secondly, I encountered an issue with the timing of the gym cleaning. On multiple occasions, staff would come in to clean the gym with heavily scented chemicals while I was the only person using the gym. Given that the gym was seemingly almost always empty, it was particularly frustrating to have this cleaning done during the few times I was using it. The strong chemical odors and fumes are concerning for my health, and I believe this could have been easily avoided by scheduling the cleaning during a time when the gym was unoccupied. The gym was hot, cramped, and muggy, with no windows that opened or airflow. There were no workout or stretching mats in the gym, and the ceiling insulation in the parking garage fell, covering my vehicle. Additionally, the Wi-Fi throughout the hotel was horribly inconsistent, making it extremely disruptive. I was repeatedly woken up by extremely loud drilling on the roof, with no advanced warning. The noise was so intense that it was impossible to go back to sleep. Additionally, after the elevators were cleaned, I was alarmed by their condition. The floors became extremely slippery, yet there was no safety signage to warn guests of the potential hazard, creating a dangerous situation that could easily lead to accidents. Proper communication and warning signs would have been easy to provide and greatly appreciated. I hope this issue is addressed immediately to prevent any harm to future guests. I hope these concerns are taken into consideration, as they are crucial for the comfort, safety, and health of guests.
