Chambersburg, Pennsylvania: Civil War History Surrounded by Nature
Chambersburg has found itself at the crossroads of history more than your average American town: It was a frontier during the French and Indian War, a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the one of the few communities burned down by the Confederate army during the Civil War.
As you might expect, there are quite a few landmarks in Chambersburg that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The John Brown House preserves a home in which the famous abolitionist lived during the summer of 1859 while plans were made to take control of the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. There’s also a memorial on Main Street that memorializes the city’s burning during the Civil War. The infamous Gettysburg battle site is located about 25 miles southeast of Chambersburg, too.
History isn’t the only draw of Chambersburg. You’ll be within a few miles of Caledonia State Park, which has 1,125 acres of unspoiled forest with 10 miles of hiking trails, including 1.8 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Downtown Chambersburg has its own charm, with venerable buildings, boutique shops, and local restaurants.
